Venus Williams... tush-exposing cancan dress at French Open

Oh, my.

From USA Today, Eye-Opener: Venus Williams’ French Open outfit too ooh-la-la?:

Good morning. And let’s begin the day with a famous French saying: “Ooh-la-la.”

Venus Williams sports a colorful outfit during her first-round match at the French Open.

Those were the words on many lips on Day 1 of the French Open as Venus Williams played in an outfit that was straight out of Moulin Rouge.

The corset-style dress that revealed thong underwear was black and lacy with red trim and had some see-through effects working. And to be fair, it wouldn’t have drawn any notice at all . . . if it had been worn by a can-can dancer.

Huh? If she had worn a barely-there thong bikini, it wouldn’t have drawn any notice at all on a beach.

But this wasn’t a beach nor was it a can-can performance. Maybe next time, Williams will go topless… which wouldn’t draw any notice in an adult film or a Nevada brothel.

From Reuters, Risque Venus brings Moulin Rouge style to French Open:

Before sticking to the strict all-white dress code at Wimbledon next month, Venus Williams is indulging in some risque French cancan in Paris.

The American’s black lace corset resembling an offcast from the nearby Moulin Rouge cabaret has been the talk of the French Open, and the accompanying tight skin-colored knickers have raised just as many dumbstruck glares.

The second seed’s 6-2 6-4 second-round win over Spain’s Arantxa Parra Santonja was very much a secondary issue for many Wednesday.

“The design has nothing to do with the rear. It just so happens that I have a very well developed one,” she chuckled during her post-match press conference.

The opening Wednesday at Roland Garros is traditionally when Parisian schoolchildren are given priority for tickets, and they and their teachers almost got even more than they bargained for as the unconvincing red straps to Venus’s dress threatened to reveal yet more of the American.

The world number two wore the outfit for the first time at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami earlier this year and she uses her daring court appearances to promote her own line of fashions.

“It’s really about the illusion. Like you can wear lace, but what’s the point of wearing lace when there’s just black under,” she added.

“The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely for me a lot more beautiful. So it’s really not about anything else other than just that skin showing.”

Venus, who seems to prefer to talk fashion than tennis, believes her outfit is the symbol of her personality.

Sigh.

UPDATE, May 30, 2010… Venus loses.

From Associated Press, VWilliams loses to Petrova at French Open:

PARIS – Venus Williams’ celebrated corset went under wraps Sunday, and now it’s out of the French Open.

Playing with a long-sleeve top over her black lace outfit on a chilly afternoon, Williams lost in the fourth round to Nadia Petrova, 6-4, 6-3.

Williams came into the tournament seeded No. 2 behind her sister Serena, but Petrova spoiled the possibility of a sibling showdown in the final.

“I’m obviously disappointed,” Williams said. “I feel like I had a day where I wanted to hit the ball cross-court and it went down the line. It just wasn’t a good day.”

Petrova has been a nemesis for the Williams family lately — she beat Serena in the third round at Madrid less than three weeks ago.
