Obama’s Oil Spill — Liz Cheney: “Gift for Reading the TelePrompter Is Not the Same As Leadership” — Gov Jindal: “There Could Have Been a Greater Sense of Urgency” (video)

Attorney and co-founder of Keep America Safe Liz Cheney matter-of-factly points out in the FOX video below the problems with Pres. Barack Obama’s lack of leadership on the oil spill catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil continues to wash up on the Louisiana coastline and destroy the rare wetlands.
Cheney believes that Obama leaving for vacation has sent the wrong message to Americans looking for strong leadership from him, and that “A gift for reading the teleprompter is not the same as leadership.”
Just saying the right words doesn’t make it happen and doesn’t make it so…

Gov. Bobby Jindal spoke with ABC’s News Jake Tapper on the oil spill and what the government did and did not do to prevent the environmental damage of Louisiana’s coast and the fishing industry.
Because the government has grown so large, Jindal believes it is unable to fulfill its primary responsibility: safety for the country, whether it be from terrorists or from catastrophes such as the BP oil spill.
From Jake Tapper, Political Punch, ABC News: Louisiana Gov. Jindal to Obama: Give Us More Power on Oil Spill:
In an exclusive interview on ‘This Week’, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says he told President Obama “for us, it’s trust but verify.”
“You know, it’s that old saying that we’ve heard promises, we want to see that happen on the ground,” Jindal said.
The President met with Jindal and other state and local leaders on Friday. After that meeting, in a Sunday show exclusive, Jindal told ‘This Week’ anchor Jake Tapper that he was direct with the President: “We need more local decision-making authority.”
“We asked for senior Coast Guard officials to be put in each coastal parish,” the governor said he told the president.
When asked whether he agreed with Obama’s claim that the government was doing everything it could, Jindal said, “I think there could have been a greater sense of urgency.”
Jindal recounted to ‘This Week’ host Jake Tapper one instance where BP and federal government bureaucracy got in the way of the cleanup.
“Terrebonne Parish…submitted a plan for 180,000 feet of hard boom. The Coast Guard approved them for 90,000 feet. A week ago Friday, they didn’t even have 90,000 feet. They didn’t have that much boom, hard boom, in the parish…”
Tapper asked the governor what happened next.
“Well, in that case, they literally had hard boom sitting on the dock and they didn’t deploy it,” Jindal said. “There was no excuse. The BP contractor said BP told them not to do it until the oil was coming. NOAA projections showed for days, and we saw the oil ourselves.”
“We finally brought the Coast Guard captain that was in charge of Louisiana’s response with us on a National Guard Black Hawk helicopter, showed him the oil on the island, showed him the sheen in the bay, showed him the oil coming into that area, and said this needs to be boomed. He agreed it needed to be boomed,” Jindal said.
The boom was finally deployed.
Tapper also pushed Jindal, an avowed conservative, to reconcile his belief in small government with his demands for more federal assistance.
“When government grows too big, it doesn’t do its core functions properly,” he said. “Absolutely, I believe in a limited government that is effective and competent in what it does. We need federal government exactly — we need our federal government exactly for this kind of crisis.”
From Washington Post, BP says crude may continue flowing into gulf until August:
As BP prepared to implement another fallback plan to contain the worst oil spill in U.S. history, Obama administration and BP officials said crude could continue flowing into the Gulf of Mexico until August.
The “American people need to know that it is possible we will have oil leaking from this well until August when the relief wells will be finished,” presidential adviser Carol Browner said on the CBS show Face the Nation.
Browner also warned that the spill could get worse for several days as BP attempts to put in place another containment structure. That effort will involve cutting a pipe that rises from the seabed, and because a kink in the riser may be limiting the flow, cutting it could release as much as 20 percent more oil over a period of four to seven days, Browner said.
Hopes for an earlier solution were dashed Saturday when BP conceded defeat in its attempt to plug the well through a maneuver known as a “top kill.” The effort involved pumping mud into the runaway well, but the pressure of the leak proved overpowering.
The failure of the top kill left a deepening sense of despair in the Gulf region, where the spill threatens the ecology, the economy, and a way of life for people in the fishing industry.
