Blood-Boiling: US Constitution, Declaration of Independence Have Warning Labels Now… Publisher Under Fire from Americans (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on June 13, 2010
Just when you thought you’d heard it all from the radical left-wing loony bin in America and could no longer be stunned… there’s THIS pile of statist horse puckies.
The newest atrocity: a jaw-droppingly offensive warning label that now accompanies reprints of the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Common Sense, the Articles of Confederation, and the Federalist Papers, courtesy of misguided, anti-America publisher Wilder Publications.
Text of warning label:
This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today. Parents might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.
More blood-boiling, anti-American, left-wing radicalism. And really stupid. Because of the resulting boycott that is now growing, this company may find itself in a bankrupted socialist boat without a paddle purty durned quick. I doubt that the company’s sales will increase because of radical liberals’ delight over this wacky warning label — how many radical liberals ever buy founding document reprints, let alone READ them? Doubtful that sales from liberals amount to more than 5% of the company’s Constitution reprint sales. Which means that an estimated 95% of its customers will be appalled and will retaliate by no longer doing business with Wilder Publications.
Free market principles at their finest.
From Seattle Pi, Warning Label on Constitution Draws Fire:
Men and women in the service, protect our country and Constitution but know that one small publishing company believes our Constitution needs warning labels.
In a recent AP story, Wilder Publications came under attack for putting warning labels on copies of the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Common Sense, the Articles of Confederation and the Federalist Papers.
In their warning, they state that “This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today.”
The disclaimer suggests to parents that they “might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written BEFORE (my caps) allowing them to read this classic work.”
Warning labels on the founding document of our country. I’m sure some will suggest we put warning labels on all historical documents and history books – after all, its not real pretty how America became what we are today – we should “dumb down” the challenges, the mistakes, the absolute brutalities and wrong decisions made by leadership over the years – we wouldn’t want to learn from those mistakes, would we? But I digress.
Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, says the company may be trying to ensure that oversensitive people don’t pull its works off bookstore or library shelves.
The warning label is actually having the opposite effect. Almost all reviews from Amazon customers who are discussing the disclaimer are calling for an all-out boycott and strong suggestion to “not buy from the publisher.”
Defend our Constitution – just know that some think it needs a warning label.
From FOX News, Warning Label on Constitution Draws Fire:
A small publishing company is under fire after putting warning labels on copies of the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other historical documents.
Wilder Publications warns readers of its reprints of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Common Sense, the Articles of Confederation, and the Federalist Papers, among others, that “This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today.”

Walter Olson, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, says the company may be trying to ensure that oversensitive people don’t pull its works off bookstore or library shelves.
“Any idea that’s 100 years old will probably offend someone or other,” Olson told FoxNews.com. “…But if there’s anything that you ought to be able to take at a first gulp for yourself and then ask your parents if you’re wondering about this or that strange thing, it should be the founding documents of American history.”
The warning seems to be offending more people than the documents themselves.
Amazon.com’s customer reviews of Wilder’s copy of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation show an overwhelming number of people speaking out against the disclaimer, describing it as “insulting,” “sickening” and “frankly, horrifying.”
Another review for Wilder’s edition of the Federalist Papers calls for an all-out boycott of the publisher, sarcastically pointing out the “dangerous ideas” it’s trying to protect children from: “limited government, checks and balances, constrained judicial review, dual sovereignty of states and federal government, and deliberative democracy.”
And though warning labels are usually posted to protect a company from potential lawsuits, constitutional attorney Noel Francisco says this disclaimer has no legal benefits.

From Stop the ACLU, A Warning Label For The Constitution?:
Even though this was a private company who did this, why do I get the feeling that Obama and the Donkeys agree with this?
From Another Black Conservative, Publisher adds warning label for the Constitution:
This political correctness nonsense is really getting way out of hand. It was a sad day when Americans allowed political correctness to gain any currency in this country. So many half-baked and intellectually infirm ideas from Political Correctness have arisen and taken root. It is high time American begin to aggressively reject Political Correctness in all of its forms. It is comforting to see that so many people on Amazon are calling for a boycott of all books by this publisher. Hitting PC-pushing fools in the pocketbook is probably the fastest way to kill nutty ideas like this.
From Jeremy Sarber, Warning Label on the Constitution?:
This is so absurd it is hardly worth mentioning. First of all, every published work listed here is an important part of our history. History is history. Are there really people out there who are so sensitive that they could be offended by the writings of Thomas Paine or John Jay?
Second of all, it really disturbs me how the Constitution of the United States of America is considered an historical writing that no longer “reflects the values of today.” Regardless of your opinions concerning the Constitution, it remains the Supreme Law of this country. It was not some editorial from the 1780s. It has been and still is THE LAW.
From Publius’ Forum, Publisher’s Warning Label: That Constitution and Declaration is No Longer Valid Thinking:
FoxNews was not able to elicit a comment from Wilder Publications and the webpage of the company seems to feature a lot of self-published type stuff, so big time it is not.
But, looking at the New Agie stuff the company prints, I’d say that we are dealing with a bunch of left-wingers that really do find America’s founding documents unacceptable. It is also pretty plain that they do not have the first grasp of what those very founding ideas mean or why they are so amazing.
I’d also guess that this small company is also trying, in a ham-fisted way, to protect itself from some level of liability. Not that anyone should expect that readers might want to sue anyone over these 200-year-old documents and other, older ideologies, but, I guess you never know these days.
From The Powers That Be, What Took So Long? Publishing Company Puts Warning Label on Constitution, Declaration:
A glance at the company’s website makes it apparent it’s a dink operation, but still, parents might also want to discuss with their children what asshats run Wilder Publishing before reading the disclaimer.
Actually, given the way things have been going, I can’t believe the disclaimer thing took so long.
My own warning label:
WARNING: US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and American patriotism videos ahead… watching these videos could influence children, renew interest, and inspire more national patriotism and understanding of America’s laws and founding documents, while angering those who are anti-American, anti-free market, anti-freedom, and anti-free thinking. Proceed at your own risk. God bless America.
