Mayor Daley’s Idiocy: Guns Banned in Chicago, One Man Defies Law to Save His Own Life from Armed Criminals, Mayor Won’t Admit Ban Is a Failure
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on June 22, 2010

Chicago's crime rate is one of the highest in the nation - many believe it is because law-abiding citizens cannot arm themselves against criminals. One man defied the law to save his own life, flustering Mayor Daley.
Chicago has one of worst crime rates of the major cities in the United States — its homocide rate increased this past year. And this is with (or because of) its ban of guns, the strictest in the nation.
Of course, sleazoid criminals who can’t function in society — who methodically abuse others and arrogantly break laws — won’t honor a handgun ban law. Therefore, it’s no surprise that decent, hard-working, law-abiding citizens in Chicago are like trapped fish in a barrel, just waiting to be picked off by any scum bag who can buy a black market gun in the Windy City. Knowing that law-abiding citizens are unarmed makes things easier for the bad guys, makes them bolder.
Chicago law enforcement tries to keep up with the thugs, and confiscated 3,513 weapons last month, 189 more than in May of last year. CBS 2 reports,
Of the weapons seized in May, 130 were assault weapons.
“Sadly, these figures come to an average of nearly one weapon recovered an hour for the entire year, and nearly one assault weapon each day,” police Supt. Jody Weis said in a news release.
Even liberal reporters in Chicago are questioning the wisdom of the gun ban.
In 2009, an 80-year-old Korean War veteran (name withheld) in Chicago was robbed at gunpoint by three low-life barfbags. In his home. HIS HOME. He couldn’t legally own a gun, but the three gunmen who attacked him each had their own. After surviving his terrifying attack, this military veteran swore to himself to never again be a victim in his own home, so he bought himself a handgun.
Thus, in order to protect himself from injury or death, this man had to break Chicago law.
And then, you guessed it. The vet was threatened at gunpoint a year later by another low-life barfbag who had a lengthy crime bio and prison stint. But this time, the bad guy lost. He’s now a dead barfbag.
The octogenarian war veteran saved himself, shot the animal who wanted to kill him, and the story should end there. But of course, it doesn’t since this happened in Chicago.
Gregory Kane has the details about the old man’s second encounter with a hardened criminal with little respect for human life, Anthony Nelson. And how the mayor of Chicago is more concerned about a misguided, anti-Second amendment law than about the safety of the city’s citizens.
From Democrat and Chronicle, Gregory Kane: What Mayor Daley really fears:
If an 80-year-old Korean War veteran defending his home against a career criminal doesn’t convince Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley that his city’s ban on handguns is wrong, what will?
The evidence stared Daley squarely in the face, and he still couldn’t see it. Chicago police wouldn’t release the elderly man’s name, but they did release Anthony Nelson’s.
[...]
In late May Nelson, a man recently released from prison and who had previously served prison stints for drug dealing and weapons violations, broke into the elderly man’s home. Nelson was armed — no need to obey Chicago’s ban on handguns for this guy — and fired a shot at the elderly man. Nelson missed; the Korean War veteran didn’t. One fatal shot later Nelson lay dead and this story, in cities and states that legally allow their citizens to defend themselves with firearms, would have been over.
Not in Chicago. A debate raged — and still rages — about whether Chicago’s ban is wise lawmaking or if it’s puddin’-headed and downright unconstitutional. Daley, during his comments in the wake of Nelson’s shooting, did nothing to bolster the argument of those who favor handgun bans. Here’s his reaction, taken from a Chicago Sun-Times story:
“Daley said that he ‘understands the frustration’ that prompted an 80-year-old robbery victim to purchase a handgun that he used this week to kill a home intruder.
“But the mayor said that does not mean Chicago’s strictest-in-the-nation handgun ban is a mistake or a widely-ignored charade.
“He still believes that…access to guns kills far more people than it saves.”
If the elderly Korean War vet didn’t have access to a handgun, he’d be the one who was killed. He’d be the one whose life wasn’t saved. That man — a hero to all Second Amendment enthusiasts — chose to save his own life, even if he had to break Chicago’s handgun law to do it.
There are portions of the story that include direct quotes from Daley, and believe me, they’re lulus. Here’s the first:
“Criminals have far more access to guns today than in the history of this country and that is frightening to America. We have to do something about it. You cannot live in America as the Wild West. It’s an issue that most people are afraid to talk about. It’s an issue that, politically, is incorrect. You’ll defeat your career. It is something you should forget about. Let people handle these situations. But if you firmly believe that people should have access to guns at all times, then you have a totally different society.”
That different society Daley refers to would be called “a safer one.” Daley isn’t convinced of that, but I’m sure that elderly Korean War veteran, his family and loved ones sure as heck are. Here’s Daley’s other quote:
“Access to guns will destroy America faster than any other war. Take Europe. Take Japan and other countries that don’t have the access to guns. They don’t have the amount of killings.”
Daley clearly can’t distinguish the justified killings from the unjustified ones. But the issue isn’t access to handguns, or lack of it. The issue is the failure of leadership that comes from elected officials like Daley.
When a city or state bans handguns, its elected officials implicitly enter into a contract with its citizens. Those officials guarantee that the Anthony Nelsons of the country aren’t going to harm them, that our prisons will either keep them locked away or that police will be Johnny-on-the-spot to protect them when the miscreants break into their homes or menace them on the streets.

If elected officials can’t make good on any of those guarantees, then legislators shouldn’t pass handgun bans. And those in the executive branch of government sure as heck shouldn’t sign such laws either.
What does Daley really fear: criminals having access to handguns, or law-abiding citizens having access to handguns?
I wrote this in December about Chicago’s mayor…
This is the same left-wing Daley who blamed the Fort Hood jihad massacre not on zealous, bloodthirsty Muslims, not on Islamic mandates that all infidels should be dead, nor on the deranged Nidal Malik Hasan who launched the massacre, but blamed America’s love of guns. Richard, Richard, Richard… you’re such a leftist clown who wants to deny Americans of their Second Amendment rights. Drunk drivers are blamed for their crimes, not their cars. Conservative writers are attacked by the White House and left-wing media for writing their anti-socialist opinions… their pens or pencils or computer keyboards aren’t blamed. When Muslim terrorists behead an American journalist in the name of Allah, the saber used in the beheading isn’t blamed for the murder.

Hi Vicki,
As we touched on yesterday, so much of what the left does is directed against the welfare of citizens, even when life or livelihood is at stake. Your post today on Jindal being stopped by the 0 admin. from dealing with the oil spill is more of the same spirit.
Thank God there is a very serious legal challenge going on (or about to be launched) against Daley’s gun law by the group that got a similar stringent gun law in D.C. overturned by the Supreme Court about a year ago.

Well said, Larry.
I did see a headline about her passing away, and hope to do a bit of research on it later today. Too much Obama news tearing at my attention (nothing new).
