Hundreds of out-of-state labor union members came to Phoenix and Tucson yesterday to protest implementation of Arizona’s SB 1070.
Most will be leaving Arizona today, if they haven’t already, so today should be much calmer, less unruly in the downtown Phoenix and Tucson areas. The local police can now focus on doing their real jobs rather than overseeing riot control and arresting dozens of shipped-in, pro-illegal alien ruffians (love that word “ruffians”) intent on creating havoc. Although, protecting AZ citizens and property from the protesters was indeed doing their jobs — I’m not trying to trivialize what these courageous law enforcement officers were put through yesterday. But many of the people they had to watch over and subdue were “professional protesters” who were trying to get arrested.
BTW… Thank you, pro-illegal alien protesters, for bringing some extra “tourist bucks” to Arizona by purchasing food, gas, liquor, and booking hotel rooms and other sundry items while you were here. We appreciate it.
From KTAR News, Most protesters not from Arizona:
PHOENIX – Watching television, you’d think thousands of Arizonans have flooded streets to protest SB 1070. But, the reality is most of those caught by TV cameras are from somewhere else. And, many of them are union workers.
Nearly a dozen chartered carrying immigrant-rights activists left Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles for the ride to Phoenix. The buses carried nearly 600 union members.
Several of those arrested in downtown Phoenix Thursday morning were from churches in Colorado and elsewhere.
KTAR reporters talked to dozens of those participating in civil disobedience and we asked them where they were from. The reporters heard cities like Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Denver.
The new law taking effect Thursday was designed to crack down on illegal immigration but critics say it encourages racism against Hispanics.
Lakesha Harrison says she has heard about the raids and families being torn apart, saying it is not American.
“This is a land of immigrants and everybody here should be welcomed as immigrants and should be helped to figure out a way to become U.S. Citizens,” she said.
A federal judge in Phoenix on Wednesday issued a temporary injunction delaying the most contentious provisions, including a requirement that immigrants carry their papers and that police check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws.
Arizona’s governor says she’ll appeal the ruling.
From ABC, Hundreds arrive on a caravan of buses from LA to protest 1070:
PHOENIX – Hundreds of people from a California labor union have made their way to Phoenix in protest of Senate Bill 1070.
A caravan of 11 buses carrying 500 members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) left L.A. Dodgers’ stadium at 4 a.m.
The buses arrived in Phoenix around 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthews Church at 20th Avenue and Van Buren Street.
The activists are expected to meet with working Arizonans facing the states new immigration law.
They will march to the Arizona state Capitol and end their journey with a vigil there before returning to L.A.
The delegation will return to Dodger Stadium by midnight.
Petra Falcon, director of Promise Arizona and one of the events Arizona hosts, said she helped arrange the visit to draw attention to the passage of SB 1070 and other similar legislation in the context of the struggles of all working people.
The results of this Rasmussen poll was reported by Ace of Spades HQ… Rasmussen: Support For Border Fence Up To 68%:
Ten percent here, ten percent there, and pretty soon you’re talking about a real mandate.
Support for the building of a fence along the Mexican border has reached a new high, and voters are more confident than ever that illegal immigration can be stopped.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of U.S. voters now believe the United States should continue to build a fence on the Mexican border. That’s up nine points from March when the Obama administration halted funding for the fence and the highest level of support ever.
Just 21% oppose the continued building of the border fence.
Support for the fence is strong across all demographic groups. But while 76% of Mainstream voters think the United States should continue to build the fence, 67% of the Political Class are opposed to it.
I always enjoy how twits speak of the symbolism of a thing.
That’s why the “Political Class” — the Gee Aren’t I Terribly Enlightened? crowd — opposes this. They talk about that a lot — the symbolism of the thing.
How about discussing the reality of it? It’s a fence. Its real purpose — in real-world, real-time reality — is to halt people from crossing a border. A real border, mind you, although on that point I concede a border is a more abstract concept than, say, a shoe.
It doesn’t symbolically represent a division between the countries. It actually is a division between the countries.
And what is wrong with that?

More on the protests in Tucson…
From Arizona Daily Star, 13 arrested at Tucson immigration protest:
Tucson police said 13 people protesting the state’s new immigration law were arrested for blocking downtown streets Thursday afternoon.
West Congress Street and Granada Avenue were closed for more than an hour because of the protests. Police arrested and cited the 13 while others were told to move out of the roadway.
Twelve of the protesters were cited for failing to disperse following police commands. One protester was cited for threats and intimidation. All were cited and released, police said.
Earlier Thursday, traffic on Interstate 19 was briefly disrupted south of Ajo Way after a group of protesters placed tar and tires on the highway.
A group calling itself “Freedom for Arizona” said it planned to cover the southbound lanes of I-19 with tires covered in tar and broken glass to shut down “the very road that is used to deport people deemed ‘illegal’ as well as a direct disruption of the flow of capital,” the group said in a news release.
Law enforcement officials have cleaned up the tires and reopened the interstate, according to the Department of Public Safety.
There were no reports of injuries.
Andres Chavez was arriving home from school and saw the whole incident. He said two trucks driving parallel on southbound Intestate-19 between Ajo and Valencia stopped and threw tires connected by rope from the truck beds.
The 8-12 men in the trucks then threw brown paint, broken glass and a sign over the tires. The sign read: “Stop the militirazation on the border.” Then, they drove away, Chavez said.
“They halted traffic completely and almost got rear-ended by cars behind them,” Chavez said.
Chavez pulled the 15-20 tires off the road because he was worried about wrecks.
“I have no problem with people protesting or whatever, but they were putting people’s lives at risk,” said Chavez, a 23-year-old University of Arizona journalism student. “There could have been a multi-car pile up there.”
He described the tire-throwers as men between the ages of 20-25 who wore regular clothes.

Thanks for this story, Vicki. I haven’t seen it elsewhere.
I have not commented as much lately, but I always check out what you’re saying.
By the way, I wonder if Zip’s comment about Lindsey Graham in this story:
http://weaselzippers.us/2010/07/29/huh-lindsey-graham-says-he-may-introduce-constitutional-amendment-aimed-at-ending-anchor-babies/
may owe its inspiration to your post on Lindsey’s alien abductions (LOL). (I left a link about a month ago in the comments at WZ to your post.)
I always love hearing from you, Larry – comment whenever you have the spare time or inclination. I always appreciate your input. Thanks for the chuckle about Weasel Zippers and my aliens from outer space gag. Chances are it could be a “great minds running in the same channel” kind of thing, but who knows?
I had something similar happen this past week. With the ethics violations trial coming up for NY’s Rep. Charlie Rangel, I immediately thought of those old TV ads for Star-Kist tuna, where the tag line was “Sorry, Charlie.” I tried to find a graphic with the little note with “Sorry, Charlie” written on it to no avail, so hit YouTube to locate the vintage commercials – I found what I was looking for and photo-captured two of them from the videos. Long story short, I spent a ridiculous amount of time on my oh-so-clever “Sorry, Charlie” hook (OK, not all that clever, but I thought it was pretty funny). Five minutes after I posted the piece, I started browsing my favorite blogs and OH MY. Another Black Conservative also had gone with the “Sorry, Charlie” rib on the Rangel ethics trial. He didn’t use a cool Star-Kist graphic, but it was the same idea. And we both came up with it independently of each other. What can I say? There’s nothing new under the sun…
Concerning the fracas that went on here in Arizona yesterday over SB 1070 protests, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.
I loved your Starkist picture for the Rangel post.
I wondered where you got it: a capture from a vid.
Cool!
Have a great weekend!
