Nevada’s state unemployment is at 14 percent, the highest in the nation. Per the government’s Bureau of Labor report that was released in June on unemployment in metropolitan regions, Las Vegas is at a staggering 14.5 percent unemployment (some sources put Las Vegas’s unemployment at 14.2 percent). Nevada also leads the nation for the highest rate of home foreclosures and bankruptcy filings.
Who is to blame for this mess, this downward economic spiral of Nevada?

WASHINGTON — As he fights for a fifth term, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is touting his clout as a key reason that voters should keep him in Washington.
But just what has Reid’s seniority — and his powerful position as majority leader — brought Nevada?
The answer, if you look just at the federal earmarks he’s gotten in the past two years to fund Nevada projects, is nearly $662 million, to pay for everything from Lake Tahoe restoration to firefighting equipment for Reno.
Reid ranked No. 6 in the Senate in fiscal year 2010 for the number of earmarks he got for his state, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, an anti-earmark group.
Reid brought home more money than the other four members of Nevada’s congressional delegation combined, pushing Nevada into the Top 10 of states that receive the most federal earmarks per capita. The only senators who got more special project funding than Reid were senior members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, whose members see bringing home the most earmarks as the principal perk of being on the panel.
“The earmark system operates on the basis of political muscle, and there’s no doubt that Sen. Reid has the muscle,” said Steve Ellis of Taxpayers for Common Sense. “Someday, when he’s no longer in office, Nevada is going to move to the bottom of the barrel.”
But while no one disputes the funding numbers, there is debate over how much good the federal largesse has done the ailing state, which now has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. Nevada’s unemployment rate hit 14.2 percent in June.
Nevada also had the highest rate of home foreclosures in the nation during the first half of this year.
“I think those facts speak for themselves,” said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which is seeking to oust Reid and replace him with Republican Sharron Angle. “Harry Reid brags about his clout and what he’s done for Nevada, but the reality is that since he’s been majority leader, the unemployment rate in his state has gone from 4.5 percent to 14.2 percent.“

Inquiring minds want to know… did Mayor Oscar Goodman get an apology from Pres. Barack Obama for his thoughtless, dismissing remarks made at the beginning of the year against Las Vegas and tourists spending their money in Vegas?
