Privacy invasion: Full-body scans at airports are like a 'virtual strip search'... this is a female body scan, which has been stored
The Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration announced last year that US airports would be using checkpoint full-body scan equipment to scrutinize airplane passengers before boarding in a weak-kneed attempt to stop Islamic terrorism. This was partially in response to the Christmas Day bomber, Islamic extremist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who attempted to blow up a NWA flight, Flight 253, headed for Detroit on Christmas morning 2009.
There was justifiable outcry from citizens across the nation who were concerned about the government’s over-the-top invasion of privacy — the concern was expressed that people’s naked images would be stored, available for later viewing. The constitutionality of full-body scans by the government were also raised.
Left-wing media hacks mocked those who were alarmed, and the federal government assured the skeptical public that those nude images would not ever be stored — they’d be destroyed.
Well, Team Obama and the left-wing JournoList apparently misrepresented the facts. AGAIN.
I’m making an assumption that the JournoList was involved… examining the left-wing journalist “cover up club’s” propensity and track record for suppressing the truth and protecting Obama’s image, it is a more than fair assumption. I apologize if I’m wrong. My apology to these left-wing hacks is just as sincere as the apology issued to Sarah Palin for their deliberate, vicious junkyard-dog attacks on her and her family for the past two years… if and when they ever do issue an apology.

For the last few years, federal agencies have defended body scanning by insisting that all images will be discarded as soon as they’re viewed. The Transportation Security Administration claimed last summer, for instance, that “scanned images cannot be stored or recorded.”
Now it turns out that some police agencies are storing the controversial images after all. The U.S. Marshals Service admitted this week that it had surreptitiously saved tens of thousands of images recorded with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint of a single Florida courthouse.
This follows an earlier disclosure (PDF) by the TSA that it requires all airport body scanners it purchases to be able to store and transmit images for “testing, training, and evaluation purposes.” The agency says, however, that those capabilities are not normally activated when the devices are installed at airports.
Body scanners penetrate clothing to provide a highly detailed image so accurate that critics have likened it to a virtual strip search. Technologies vary, with millimeter wave systems capturing fuzzier images, and backscatter X-ray machines able to show precise anatomical detail. The U.S. government likes the idea because body scanners can detect concealed weapons better than traditional magnetometers.
This privacy debate, which has been simmering since the days of the Bush administration, came to a boil two weeks ago when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that scanners would soon appear at virtually every major airport. The updated list includes airports in New York City, Dallas, Washington, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, and Philadelphia.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, has filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to grant an immediate injunction pulling the plug on TSA’s body scanning program. In a separate lawsuit, EPIC obtained a letter (PDF) from the Marshals Service, part of the Justice Department, and released it on Tuesday afternoon.
These “devices are designed and deployed in a way that allows the images to be routinely stored and recorded, which is exactly what the Marshals Service is doing,” EPIC executive director Marc Rotenberg told CNET. “We think it’s significant.”
William Bordley, an associate general counsel with the Marshals Service, acknowledged in the letter that “approximately 35,314 images…have been stored on the Brijot Gen2 machine” used in the Orlando, Fla. federal courthouse. In addition, Bordley wrote, a Millivision machine was tested in the Washington, D.C. federal courthouse but it was sent back to the manufacturer, which now apparently possesses the image database.

So, naturally, rather than take decisive steps to stop these newly trained, bloodlusting terrorists from Yemen from entering the US, stopping the release of Gitmo terrorists until further notice, Team Obama will be conducting full-body scans of airplane passengers. Including old Grandma Daisy, who also now can’t get up to hobble down the aisle to go to the bathroom during the last hour of a flight nor have anything in her lap during the flight. Senior citizens, not terrorists, will suffer the most from all this, and there is no reason to believe that these measures will deter or help capture jihadists.
So, say cheese, America… Team Obama is again not addressing radical terrorism as radical terrorism, but is bending over backwards to not insult jihadists, not single out radical Muslims, not killing the cancer at its source. Pres. Obama’s answer to fixing a leaking boat would be to buy a bigger, better water scooper and angrily chastise those in the boat for not bailing faster, than to locate and plug up the boat’s holes.
Our government/TSA intend to invade all law-abiding, non-jihadist Americans’ privacy and create a whole new level of inconvenience… rather than take any real action against terrorists who want all Americans dead.
Yemeni terrorists (there are a reported 300 new terrorists ready to be released into America) will likely abandon (for now) airplanes and start crossing into the United States via our woefully inadequate borders, as hundreds of illegal aliens do each and every day. They’ll adapt to a new jihadi modus operandi, while inept Team Obama chases its own tail on securing America and spends billions of dollars to scan your grandma’s body.
From Boston Globe, Lawsuit challenges airport full-body scanners:
A privacy advocacy group is suing the Department of Homeland Security to suspend the use of the controversial full-body scanners employed at airports across the country, including at every major checkpoint at Logan International Airport.
The machines, which use X-rays or radio frequency energy to detect weapons and explosives beneath passengers’ clothing, have been much criticized because of privacy concerns.
In the lawsuit, filed last month, the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, D.C., said the slightly blurred but accurate pictures of passengers’ naked bodies produced by the machines are the equivalent of a “digital strip search.’’
The suit says the program, run by the Transportation Security Administration, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, violates the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedure Act.
The program also violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the lawsuit says, referencing religious laws about modesty.
Court documents allege the scanners also violate the Fourth Amendment by having passengers undergo “a uniquely invasive search without any suspicion that particular individuals have engaged in wrongdoing.’’
