I’m elated, as well as stunned, floored, speechless, and wary — as great as this breaking news sounds about the World Trade Center Ground Zero mega mosque in New York City being canceled, I’m not ready to do the “Snoopy Dance of Joy” quite yet.
Color me a tad skeptical… I’m going to wait a bit longer for the other shoe to drop.

After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero – the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York – it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.
The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.
Sources in New York said on Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the project in the next few days.
New York Governor David Patterson said last weekend that Muslim leaders had rejected outright his proposal to swap the site in for another in Manhattan.
But several people familiar with the debate among New York’s Islamic activists now claim that the leaders are convinced abandoning the site is preferable to unleashing a wave of bitterness towards Muslims.
They also hope the move will be seen as a show of sensitivity to families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, and to the American public generally.
Another factor in the apparent climbdown is a lack of funds to pay for construction of the center, estimated to cost a hundred million dollars. Backers hope moving it will lead to a wave of support, accompanied by cash donations.
It is also possible that the decision was also influenced by comments made by U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday, in which he appeared to reverse an earlier show of support.
So, indirectly, we have Dear Leader’s ridiculous flip-flopping to thank for this sudden change of heart of Muslim leaders. Who would have ever guessed THAT would happen? Surely not Barack.

President Barack Obama on Saturday sought to defuse the controversy over his remarks on plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero, insisting that he wasn’t endorsing the specific project — though that’s exactly what prompted his remarks — but making a general plea for religious tolerance.
“In this country we treat everybody equally and in accordance with the law, regardless of race, regardless of religion,” Obama told reporters Saturday when asked about his remarks at a White House dinner marking the start of Ramadan.
“I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there,” Obama continued. “I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That’s what our country is about. And I think it’s very important as difficult as some of these issues are that we stay focused on who we are as a people and what our values are all about.”
But his comments Friday night were widely interpreted as an endorsement of plans to build a mosque a few blocks away from where nearly 3,000 Americans perished at the hands of Islamic terrorists on 9/11 – an interpretation the White House hadn’t disputed, up until Obama’s comments in Florida.
Already, though, Obama’s comments on the Ground Zero mosque have transformed an emotion-laden local dispute in New York into a nationwide debate overnight, setting nervous Democrats on edge and creating potentially dramatic political implications in the upcoming midterm elections.

Several Democratic sources said that some New York delegation members have, in recent weeks, expressed privately their discomfort with the topic.
“This is still like an emotional wound for a lot of people,” said one source, adding that many delegation members have said, “I know that there’s nothing wrong with it. … I just kind of wish it wasn’t happening (near Ground Zero).”
For the thousands of families devastated by the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, this will come as welcomed news. For millions of Americans who saw this mega mosque monstrosity as a “victory mosque” for the worst slaughter of innocent Americans on American soil in our nation’s history, this is a triumph.
For those thousands of citizens in New York City who rallied at countless protests against this huge mosque, I applaud you all for your valiant, tenacious efforts to prevent what would have been a most insensitive monument — not honoring those who died on that tragic day, but instead immortalizing the radical, scumbag Islamic terrorists who forever changed our nation nearly nine years ago.

But, I’m still not convinced. In my gut, that other shoe is just crying out to drop. History has shown that many Muslim leaders are, well, LIARS.

UPDATE – h/t to reader Larry and Weasel Zippers… turns out it was one big Islamic lie. Of course it was. There is no intention to halt the mega mosque project — screw America and screw New York. Who cares about 9/11? Certainly not radical Muslims. Lying to infidels is part and parcel of the Islamic teachings, and as far as “victory mosques” go, this would be the biggest of them all. If the murderous Hamas supports the project, then you KNOW it would never be voluntarily stopped.
It was a nice fantasy for a few hours… but then, the OTHER SHOE DROPPED.

August 17, 2010 update… maybe negotiations will begin on the relocation of the mega mosque. Who knows? This has become a frustrating yo-yo. But this news was reported today by CBS 2 NY Local News, Ground Zero Mosque On The Move?
NEW YORK (CBS 2) – There was a possible resolution in the works Tuesday night in the debate surrounding the proposed mosque and Islamic cultural center near ground zero.
CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer has learned it looks as if the developers of the mosque may be willing to budge and move away from the Park 51 location where they originally planned the construction.
So will the mosque be moving?
New York Gov. David Paterson plans to meet with developers of the controversial ground zero mosque as early as this week to offer them state land – at another location – for their cultural and religious center. Paterson told Congressman Peter King about the meeting, and King said the governor asked him to make it public.

Peachy – I really wanted to believe it, but it just seemed a little too good to be true. Something didn’t feel quite right about it – like MAYBE Muslim leaders would have put their ideology aside and analyze how much pain and anger this will cause. Who’s fooling who? Muslim zealots don’t care a rat’s patootie about others – why else would fathers be allowed by Sharia law to disfigure their daughters or kill their women? Barbarians, who claim they want to improve relations and communication and tolerance, but what they really mean is, you must do it the Islamic way or pay a severe price. Per Islamic teachings, lying to get what you want is A-OK. Lying to infidels is encouraged by Muslims. And they wonder why so few non-liberal people trust them…
So the “Snoopy Dance of Joy” needs to be postponed – for now. Maybe Greg Gutfeld WILL get to build his Muslim-friendly gay bar next to the mega mosque after all.
