NFL Investigation: Patriots’ Linebacker Brandon Spikes’ Explicit Sex Video

Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes is being investigated by the NFL for his alleged appearance in an explicit sex video
I don’t write often about sports figures, but New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes warrants more attention than most.
Last November, when he played for the Florida Gators, Spikes was suspended for eye-gouging thuggery on the field… he viciously assaulted Georgia Bulldog Washuan Ealey.
And now, less than a year later, Spikes is being investigated by the NFL for a sexually explicit video — some are labeling it “pornographic” — on the Internet.
What a peach of a guy.
From CBS News, Brandon Spikes Video? NFL Probes Explicit Online Video, Say Reports:
NEW YORK (CBS) A sexually explicit video apparently featuring New England Patriots rookie Brandon Spikes is being investigated by the NFL, according to reports.
ESPN.com reports that NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello said, “We are looking into it,” via e-mail in regard to the video. According to ESPN.com, the league’s personal conduct policy states that those associated with the league must avoid “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the National Football League.”

The video seems to have originated on the online video chatting site Chatroulette, a website where one can connect through webcams to a random succession of strangers. The explicit video shows a man who looks like Spikes lying in bed with a woman and receiving oral sex.
An anonymous e-mail reportedly offered the sex tape to Deadspin, Gawker media’s sports blog, for $1,500, but the website publicly declined. A short time later, the video was released on the website WorldStarHipHop.com.
From Back Porch FanHouse, Brandon Spikes Video From Chatroulette Leads to NFL Investigation:
The NFL is investigating the explicit video of Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes that was leaked onto the Internet, apparently to determine whether Spikes violated the league’s personal conduct policy. “We are looking into it,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Boston Herald.
At first we were left with questions whether it was in fact Spikes engaging in sexual acts with another woman in the video, but Spikes’ agent, Terry Watson, has since come forward to apologize on his client’s behalf and called it an “embarrassing situation.”
“It was something that occurred before he became an NFL draftee and a New England Patriot. I think for anyone it would be an embarrassing situation,” Watson told ESPNBoston.com. “Brandon has shown to many people the kind of person he is before and after being drafted in the second round. He’s hoping to put this behind him and looks forward to having a great football season.”
Spikes, a second-round draft pick out of the University of Florida, became subject to the policy once he was selected in the NFL Draft. Assuming it’s true that the video was recorded off chatroulette while Spikes was still in college, it would be pretty ridiculous to dock him anything beyond a small fine (and even that is debatable). Before the video surfaced, he’d done nothing but impress this preseason, racking up tackles in the Patriots’ three games.
Spikes’ cousin, Rakeem McSwain, told the Boston Herald that a woman could have put the video online without Spikes’ knowledge, which is usually how these things seem to happen. “I don’t think he’d do something like this,” McSwain said. “He’s got too much to lose. He’s a good guy.”
For those if you not in the know, chatroulette is a website on which you can have webcam-based conversations with random strangers. Some use it for things of an adult nature. Others use it to mock people and upload the fun to YouTube. It’s debatable how many actual “conversations” happen on the site.
From Boston Herald, Pats rookie in sex-tape escapade:
Pats linebacker Brandon Spikes’ pornographic Web video is being probed by the NFL, the league said yesterday, as a relative speculated the well-liked rookie might have been the victim of a cyber-prank.
“He’s come a long, long, long way to get where he is,” said Spikes’ cousin, Rakeem McSwain of Shelby, N.C. “He’s got too much to lose to be playing around with a videotape.”
McSwain said his 22-year-old cousin “might have been young and having fun,” or a woman could have put the video online without Spikes’ knowledge.
“I don’t think he’d do something like this,” McSwain said.“He’s got too much to lose. He’s a good guy.”
The video – which appears to have originated from the Webcam site Chatroulette – shows a scantily clad beauty who smiles at the camera while performing oral sex on the gridiron gladiator.
From Boston Herald, Sex tape fallout for Brandon Spikes: Reebok pulls away from proposed marketing deal:
Given the sexually-explicit video of Brandon Spikes making the rounds on the Internet, Reebok has decided against finalizing the marketing deal it had proposed for the Patriots rookie linebacker, essentially pulling it off the table.
Terry Watson, who represents the Pats second round draft pick, confirmed that Reebok, the well-known producer of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories, and a company that also has a longstanding relationship with the National Football League, had turned away from his client.
Watson, who verifed the information through Spikes’ marketing agent, did not know any of the specifics of the proposed deal.
