More Gun Battles in Mexico: Soldiers Kill 30 Drug Cartel Members Near US Border, Texas Requests Used MC-12 Aircraft for Border Protection

Posted By on September 3, 2010

With violence escalating near the Texas-Mexico border, TX lawmakers are requesting that MC-12 surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, which will no longer be used by the government following US withdrawal from Iraq, be given to them for border security

The violence and bloodshed in Mexico near the US border is increasing. Two shootouts this week between Mexican police and members of drug cartels have left 30 people dead near the US border.

Let me repeat: Near the US border.

Reminder of this jaw-droppingly stupid and clueless quote from our dim-witted DHS czarina Janet “Incompetano” Napolitano:

“I say this again as someone who has walked that border,” she said. “I’ve ridden that border. I’ve flown it. I’ve driven it. I know that border I think as well as anyone, and I will tell you it is as secure now as it has ever been.”

Yes, we all can see just how safe the border is, Czarina JaNo. Perhaps you would like to live near the southern US border to prove how safe it is?

No, I didn’t think so.

It is believed that the dead drug gang members belonged to Los Zetas, a violent criminal organization in Mexico comprised of highly trained killers who are involved in international illegal drug trade and other organized crime activities.

Members of the Texas House have formally requested that one or two MC-12 manned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft units that were used in the war in Iraq be transferred to Texas for use on the border by the Texas Air National Guard.

From KTAR News, Mexico: Soldiers kill 30 in troubled border state:

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) – Mexican soldiers killed at least 30 suspected cartel members in two shootouts near the U.S. border in a region that has become one of the biggest battlegrounds in the country’s drug war, authorities said Friday.

Twenty-five of the suspects were killed Thursday during a raid on a building in Ciudad Mier in Tamaulipas state. The other five were killed Friday in neighboring Nuevo Leon state, during a shootout on a highway leading to the border, the Mexican Defense Department said in a statement.

All 30 gunmen were believed to belong to the Zetas gang- the group suspected of killing 72 migrants nearly two weeks ago in what could be Mexico’s biggest cartel massacre to date.

Violence along Mexico’s northeastern border with Texas has reached warlike proportions amid fighting between security forces and two feuding drug gangs- the Zetas and the Gulf cartel, former allies who split this year and started a vicious battle for trafficking routes in the area.

One of two survivors of the massacre last month- an Ecuadorean- said the killers identified themselves as Zetas and gunned down the migrants because they refused to work for the gang.

A military aircraft flying over Ciudad Mier on Thursday spotted several gunmen in front of a building, the Defense Department statement said. When ground troops moved in, gunmen opened fire, starting a gunbattle in which 25 suspected cartel members died and two soldiers were wounded.

Authorities rescued three people believed to be kidnapping victims in the raid, according to the statement. The military said troops seized 25 rifles, four grenades, 4,200 rounds of ammunition and 23 vehicles.

Earlier, a military spokesman said the gunmen were believed to be on a property controlled by the Zetas.

The second shootout erupted Friday morning outside the town of Juarez in Nuevo Leon, on a highway leading to McAllen, Texas.

From TodayOnline, Clashes between soldiers, gunmen in northern Mexico leave 30 suspected cartel members dead:

The Mexican Defense Department said in a statement that 25 of the suspects were killed Thursday during a raid on a building in Ciudad Mier in Tamaulipas state. The other five were killed Friday in neighboring Nuevo Leon state, during a shootout on a highway leading to the border.

Since our war with Iraq is over and the surge was deemed successful, this next story appears to have real merit to help the Texas Air National Guard in securing its southern border and will keep a few used (expensive but already paid for) surveillance aircraft from being stored in an aircraft graveyard or scrapped. IF Team Obama gets off its collective, complacent fat buttocks and approves the request.

Reported by The Texas Tribune, Lawmakers Make a Request for More Air Surveillance:

President Obama’s announcement this week that the U.S. ended its combat mission in Iraq has state lawmakers wondering if the equipment used there couldn’t be put to good use in Texas.

Eighteen Democrats from the Texas House have attached their names to a formal request that one or two MC-12 manned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft units be transferred to Texas for use on the border by the Texas Air National Guard.

“The level of violence and bloodshed on the Mexican side of the border is tragic. Texas does not have the resources needed to address this public safety and humanitarian crisis,” the request says. The surveillance platform has the capability to act as a “virtual wall and a force multiplier to assist in interdiction operations,” it goes on to explain.

The request was dated Wednesday, the same day the federal government deployed an unmanned aerial Predator drone from Corpus Christi to conduct surveillance flights along the Texas-Mexico border.

State Rep. Allen Vaught, D-Dallas, a decorated Iraq war veteran and the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Border Security, Health and School-Centered Emergencies, stressed that the request for the transfer of the MC-12s is an attempt to engage Washington in a serious conversation about secure borders rather than hurling the heated rhetoric currently applied by some office holders or seekers.

As I wrote in a previous post, a violent gun battle in Juarez was waged a few weeks ago, forcing streets in El Paso, Texas to be closed down.

A story that went virtually unreported by the liberal mainstream media in April… evacuating US college students from Monterrey as the body counts increase:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – The University of Texas at Austin, citing the raging violence in northern Mexico, is ordering its foreign exchange students in Monterrey to return home.

The Daily Texan newspaper reported this week that UT Executive Vice-President and Provost Steven Leslie issued the recall order on March 23. The order only applies to students enrolled at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. UT officials cited a U.S. State Department travel advisory issued March 14 warning about violence along the border and in Monterrey, which is about 280 miles south of San Antonio.
