She Does It Again: Venus Williams’ Skimpy, Tight Tennis Dress, Venus Reaches Quarterfinals at US Open This Weekend
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on September 6, 2010
I’ve been busy this weekend and haven’t kept close tabs on the US Open tennis tournament. So, I was surprised when a post I wrote back in May is currently skyrocketing in readership: French Open Tennis Fashion Shocker… Venus Williams’ Skimpy Racy-Lacy Cancan Dress Shows Much More Tush Than Expected – Update: Venus Loses
The post included these provocative photos of Williams’ skimpy, tush-revealing court fashion choice at the French Open…
Baffled, I left the computer and dashed to my husband, who’s in the living room watching the US Open being played in NY. I asked him if Williams had done anything controversial today, worn anything revealing at the tournament, been disrespectful to any of the judges or used profanity like her sister Serena did last year. He said he didn’t think so.
She did win in the U.S. Open yesterday against Israeli player Shahar Peer to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals, but that didn’t explain the sudden surge in traffic in the past few hours on her racy tennis outfit.
And then, I found finally it. Yes, Venus did it again with the wearing of a skimpy tennis outfit made of black mesh and glittering patterns.
All I can say is, it’s a little less tacky and revealing than the tennis outfit she wore in May.
From Gather, Photos: Venus Williams’ Outfit Turns Heads at U.S. Open 2010:
Venus Williams once again wore an outfit that was too skimpy and too provocative for tennis. Venus Williams’ most recent U.S. Open outfit was a sheer black glittery mesh thing.
Detroit News states that Venus Williams ended up dominating the match on Friday night against 185th ranked player Mandy Minella in a 6 – 2, 6 – 1 game. The real news though was the rather interesting black see through mesh outfit Venus Williams was wearing. It kept riding up and showing her backside.
Venus Williams’ outfit had audience members talking and taking pictures. Williams once again wore flesh toned skin tight shorts beneath her outfit which added to the entertainment value of her outfit. Perhaps it was a distraction tactic because Venus easily defeated Minella to enter into the fourth round.
Eminent Column reports that this is not the first time Venus Williams’ wore a controversial outfit to a match. During the French & Australian Open, Venus also wore a controversial outfit. Speaking about her dresses, Venus Williams said, “So far this year my outfits have been based on the cities that I play in. This outfit was supposed to be about New York. It’s like bursts of fireworks.”
On the other hand, Venus is doing well at the US Open.
From CBS News, U.S. Open: Venus Williams Reaches Quarterfinal:
(AP) Venus Williams came through a test that was tougher than expected against Israel’s Shahar Peer to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the 10th time.
The No. 3-seeded Williams beat the 16th-seeded Peer 7-6 (3), 6-3 Sunday, and will face French Open champion Francesca Schiavone for a semifinal berth.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Williams is playing in her first tournament in more than two months, having missed time with a left kneecap injury that forced her to skip a pair of hard-court tuneup events.
She entered Sunday 5-0 against Peer, including 3-0 in 2010; she won all 10 sets they’d played previously, never dropping more than four games in any. But the 30-year-old Williams found herself in a first-set struggle.
“Winning the first set always feels good,” said Williams, whose younger sister Serena watched from the stands, “instead of having to regroup and figuring out how you’re going to win the match.”
Greg Couch at FanHouse wrote this piece on Williams, Venus Gives Us Rare Glimpse of Candor:
NEW YORK — Venus Williams doesn’t talk publicly about “rage and discontent.” She doesn’t talk about the difficulties she has faced as an African-American. That’s why it sounded so unusual from her on Sunday.
She is a strong and forceful woman, but her advocacy is usually done behind the scenes, like when she pushed for equal pay for women tennis players. On Sunday, she talked about a moment she had to face down in 2009, when Israeli player Shahar Peer wasn’t allowed to play in the Dubai tennis tournament, an exclusion announced as an 11th hour trick.
For maybe the first time, Williams talked about how it evoked such passion in her. To be honest, I feel that Williams failed the moment. It was a staredown, and she blinked, agreeing to play the tournament anyway.
But to hear her talk about it now, you see that it was a tough spot, that the moment wasn’t lost on her. And was it her responsibility to right a wrong?
She made a statement in Dubai last year, right in front of royalty, that Peer should have been allowed to play. Today, Peer is grateful. And in hindsight, change was made, though her role is debatable. Peer was allowed to play this year.
“She was really supportive for me, and she was also always on my side and really always stood up …” Peer said. “She understands what I feel.”
Their lives are intertwined now, and the gods keep reminding us. They played each other again Sunday in the U.S. Open. Williams won 7-6, 6-3.
