Even though our military mission in Iraq has been declared officially over, two American soldiers have been killed in Iraq.
So tragic. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts go to the family and friends of the courageous US soldiers senselessly killed earlier today by an Iraqi soldier.
From CNN, Iraqi soldier kills 2 U.S. soldiers:
Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) — An Iraqi soldier opened fire Tuesday on a group of U.S. soldiers in northern Iraq, killing two and wounding nine others, the Iraqi military said.
They are the first American deaths in Iraq since the U.S. combat mission officially ended last week.
The attack occurred inside an Iraqi army commando compound when the soldier, clad in an Iraqi army uniform, fired on the U.S. soldiers near the Salaheddin province city of Tuz, the U.S. military said. The attacker was shot and killed.
Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari, a Defense Ministry spokesman, identified the shooter as Soran Rahman, from the Iraqi army’s 4th Division.
Al-Askari said Rahman got into a fight with U.S. soldiers, and then pulled his weapon and fired on them before he was shot dead. The spokesman said a joint U.S.-Iraqi investigation into the incident was under way.
The soldiers were part of a security element for a U.S. company commander who was meeting with members of Iraqi security forces at the compound.
“This is a tragic and cowardly act, which I firmly believe was an isolated incident and is certainly not reflective of the Iraqi security forces” in Salaheddin, said Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo, commander, Task Force Marne.
In a second attack in Salaheddin province, a U.S. soldier and a number of Iraqis were wounded when a convoy in central Tikrit was hit by grenades early Tuesday afternoon, a U.S. military spokesman said. Soldiers who were in the vehicle that was attacked killed the grenade thrower, he said.
From Telegraph, First American soldiers killed since Iraq frontline withdrawal:
An Iraqi soldier opened fire on the Americans, who were escorting a company commander meeting Iraqi forces.
The attack reportedly happened after an argument over a sports match. The man, who was shot dead, was named by the Iraqi defence ministry as Soran Rahman Saleh Wali.
The incident has echoes of cases in Afghanistan where Afghans attacked allied soldiers who were training them.
It will also call into question the reliability of the Iraqi forces, who took over front-line operations last Wednesday and will be left in sole charge of internal and external security from the end of next year.
[...]
As American troops have been drawn down this year, the number of attacks by militant groups, mainly al Qaeda, has grown. Lt Gen Babaker Zebari, the Iraqi chief of staff, said before the handover that he would prefer the US army to stay until 2020.
From Los Angeles Times, 2 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq:
Reporting from Baghdad —
Two American soldiers were killed and nine were injured Tuesday when a man wearing an Iraqi army uniform opened fire on them in an Iraqi commando compound in the province of Salahuddin, an attack that highlighted the danger U.S. troops continue to face in Iraq despite the formal end of combat operations announced by President Obama last week.
The soldiers were members of a security detail guarding a U.S. company commander who was meeting with Iraqi security forces, according to a statement issued by the U.S. military. The military said it wasn’t clear whether the assailant was an Iraqi soldier, but Iraqi and Kurdish officials said the shooting occurred after an altercation between the American soldiers and a Kurdish Iraqi soldier.
The attacker was shot and killed by an American soldier, the U.S. military said.
Alaa Ahmed, a colleague of the shooter, said the man opened fire on the Americans during a dispute over a volleyball game, an account confirmed by a senior Kurdish official who asked to remain anonymous.
U.S. military spokesman Maj. Lee Peters said he could not confirm that account.
