DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) The widow of the Arizona rancher whose death became a flashpoint in the state’s immigration debate remains hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle.

Authorities say 56-year-old Miriam Susan “Sue” Krentz was helping an older friend across the street after a church service Saturday night in Douglas when both were struck by a vehicle.

Douglas police say Krentz and 79-year-old Shirley Gregory are in serious condition at University Medical Center in Tucson. They say both women suffered non life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

The vehicle’s driver remains in the Cochise County Jail on $5,000 bond. Authorities say 66-year-old Ramon Parra Saucedo of Douglas is being held on suspicion of DUI, two counts of endangerment and two counts of aggravated assault.

Krentz’s husband, rancher Rob Krentz, was found dead in March on the couple’s land in southeastern Arizona. Authorities believe he was fatally shot by an illegal immigrant possibly connected to a drug smuggling cartel.

FOX Phoenix reported that Saucedo’s blood-alcohol samples were .114 and .104, respectively. The samples were taken 7 minutes apart, which is standard procedure in taking blood-alcohol samples.

The Krentz Family has notified Stand With Arizona that “Susan is in critical but stable condition at UMC (Tucson). She had lots of internal bleeding, broken pelvis and leg. We will try to keep you posted. The family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.

The driver, Douglas resident Ramon Saucedo, has been arrested on DUI, Endangerment, and Aggravated Assault charges.

Saucedo’s truck came to a stop a half block away. “We still consider it part of the scene so no, he did not leave the scene of the accident,” says Gonzales.

Krentz and Gregory were flown to a Tucson hospital.

“Sue Krentz is a very giving person and that’s what makes this very hard,” says Father Robert Rodriguez. “Because she’s always given to others whether they’re immigrants or not and now this situation happened.”

“Mrs. Gregory was an owner of a flower shop here in town, locally, Gregory Florists,” says Gonzalez. “And they were friends for a long time and apparently they came to church together and were leaving together as well.”

Even though there is not a crosswalk in front of the church, Gonzalez says the driver is still very much responsible, “Pedestrians have the right of way even though there is no crosswalk. The charge was actual D.U.I. with a B.A.C. above .08.”
