Billionaire left-wing extremist George Soros has been secretly funding Media Matters for years, although Media Matters has repeatedly lied about it
I’ve been saying, as have many other conservative bloggers and pundits, that left-wing Media Matters has been indirectly feeding off the, er, bottle of left-wing extremist billionaire George Soros’ fortunes for years. Media Matters — that pillar of hopenchange honesty, fair and balanced journalism, and above-board ethics (insert gagging sound) — has hotly denied it or any connection to Soros. Often.
But the truth is now out.
Don’t expect those leftist hate-mongering hacks to even touch this story… they’d rather trash conservatives like Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Christine O’Donnell, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck on contrivances, half-truths, truncated and/or manipulated videos, and outlandish lies than clean-sweep their own house of deliberate deception. Soros has also given millions to the anti-Israel Human Rights Watch.
Soros claims he’s coming clean on the perpetual lie because of his contempt for FOX News. This could make a mess of Media Matters’ “not-for-profit” status with the IRS.
The fact that the ultra-liberal New York Times is breaking, and not BURYING, this revelation about Media Matters is intriguing. The left-wing spinmeisters usually defend one another or ignore negative information. Someone with half a brain at NYT must have suddenly noticed that the polls have been favoring conservative congressional candidates and predicting a Democrat bloodbath in the upcoming election and they want to be on the winning side.

From NY Times, Soros Donates $1 Million to Media Matters:
Media Matters, the liberal activist group that wages a rhetorical war against Fox News Channel and others in the conservative press, will announce on Wednesday the receipt of a $1 million donation from the philanthropist George Soros.
In a statement obtained by The Caucus, the organization says it plans to use the money to intensify its efforts to hold the Fox host Glenn Beck and others on the cable news channel accountable for their reporting.
“Fox has transformed itself into a 24-7 G.O.P. attack machine, dividing Americans through fear-mongering and falsehoods and undermining the legitimacy of our government for partisan political ends,” the group will say in the statement, to be released Wednesday afternoon.
In an accompanying statement, Mr. Soros, a billionaire who has a history of supporting liberal politicians and causes, accused Fox News hosts of “incendiary rhetoric” and said he hoped that his money would be used “in an effort to more widely publicize the challenge Fox News poses to civil and informed discourse in our democracy.”
For years, conservatives have accused Media Matters of being a front organization for Mr. Soros. In May, Mr. Beck referred to Media Matters as “the left-wing George Soros-funded media machine that is now referring to me as a jihadist.” In 2007, Fox’s Sean Hannity called it “Hillary Clinton’s George Soros-funded group Media Matters.”
Officials at Media Matters regularly deny that they have ever taken money from Mr. Soros, who repeats that denial in Wednesday’s statement, saying, “I have not to date been a funder” of the liberal organization. Now, he will officially be a donor, and likely a fresh target for criticism from the right.
Mr. Soros has been a disappointment to some liberals during the current election cycle because he has largely sat on the sidelines. In an interview with my colleague Sewell Chan earlier this month, Mr. Soros said he was concerned about a Republican surge in Congress but was not participating as he did in the past.

Everybody wins here, no? The Brock boys win by getting a cool mil to spend on new Tivos for recording Fox or whatever the hell it is they do with their money. Fox wins by having something juicy for Bill, Glenn, and Sean to talk about tonight on this otherwise extremely slow news day. Soros wins by kicking up a little insta-PR for himself among disgruntled lefties: Remember, he’s been sitting out the midterms this year despite Democrats desperately needing more outside money to try to stem the Republican tide. Dropping seven figures on the left’s favorite hatchet shop to keep screeching about Fox is right in the nutroots’s pleasure zone, and the fact that he’s making a big show of doing it publicly helps their talking point about shadowy Republican donors and the Chamber of Commerce.

In the world of Fox News, saying someone is affiliated with George Soros is akin to (no, actually worse than) saying someone is affiliated with the pagan god Ba’al. So it’s always been a little bit mystifying why FNC’s sworn enemy, Media Matters, cared so much over the years when conservative pundits accused them of being funded by the Hungarian billionaire and political activist. But care they did, and they spent years vigorously denying it (while Soros hadn’t yet directly donated, groups he backed like MoveOn.com had supported Media Matters). Now, however, it’s official: George Soros has donated $1 million directly to the watchdog group.

I had no idea Brock used to be a reporter for American Spectator before he flipped out and converted from conservatism to liberalism:

2005Established in May 2004, Media Matters is a self-styled “Web-based, not-for-profit…progressive research and information center” whose animating mission is to “systematically monitor a cross-section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation.” Falling under the category of “misinformation,” however, is not merely “news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible,” but also that which “forwards the conservative agenda.”
Functioning, in effect, as a clearinghouse for leftwing outrage, the organization’s stock in trade is feigning outrage at perspectives that clash with the far-left prejudices of its directors. As a consequence, Media Matters has a well-earned reputation for portraying honest differences of opinion as lies or worse.
In this, the organization takes its cues from its founder and CEO, the self-described former “right-wing hit man” turned left-wing hit man, David Brock. A former dirt-dishing reporter for the conservative magazine The American Spectator in the 1990s, Brock today claims to have undergone a political epiphany. He has renounced his past writings, critical of liberal figures from Anita Hill to President Bill Clinton, as a confection of lies and slanders. But the evidence suggests that while he now identifies with the political left, his modus operandi is unchanged. As his tell-all books, Blinded By The Right and The Republican Noise Machine demonstrate, dishing dirt and distorting the facts remain his stock-in-trade.

Tides has given more than $2 million to Media Matters over the last five years. Tides also gave $51,000 last year to Velvet Revolution – the same organization we just wrote about last week that was founded by a convicted domestic terrorist.
