Gunman Jared Lee Loughner killed and injured innocent people yesterday in Tucson, AZ when he attempted to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords - photo is from his 2006 Mountain View High School yearbook

As Arizona and the rest of the country are still dazed and horrified by the senseless, bloody, mass shooting that occurred yesterday outside a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, more information about the arrested gunman Jared Loughner is being released.

He’s emerging as a deeply troubled young man with dangerous, left-wing delusions and presumed mental health problems — a murderer who was a loner, was suspended from college, may have a connection with a known hate group (an anti-Jew, anti-minority hate group), and was rejected as “unqualified” by the military when he tried to enlist. On his social network page, he listed Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” as a favorite book. According to a KTAR radio broadcast this morning, Loughner will have an arraignment today, and he is being uncooperative with law enforcement.

UPDATE: Another man is being sought by police for more questioning about the shooting massacre. From a store surveillance camera, he appears to be walking into a store with his hands in his pockets. The picture from the store’s camera shows a white male with dark hair, 40 – 50 years old, dressed in blue jeans and a dark blue jacket. No word as to what has made him a person of interest to police/FBI.

From Arizona’s KTAR News, Ex-classmates describe suspect as opinionated:

TUCSON, Ariz. — Former classmates of Jared Loughner, accused of a fatal shooting rampage outside a Tucson grocery store, described him as opinionated and not concerned about what people thought of him.

Loughner, 22, was taken into custody minutes after Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were gunned down Saturday, shortly after the Democratic lawmaker began a “Congress on Your Corner” event.

Jeff Shope, who went to high school with Loughner, said, “I want to know why he did it. Obviously, there’s looking into that. (I have) no clue.”

[It was] reported that a video that Loughner made caused officials at Pima Community College to suspend him and tell his parents he could not return until he had a mental health evaluation. Loughner attended Pima from the summer of 2005 until October 2009 when he withdrew after the suspension.

A Tucson Army recruiter, 1st Sgt. Brian Homme, told that Lughner tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 and took a physical. Homme said he was rejected as unqualified. He declined to provide further information, saying the Army does not make its reasons public.

A former friend of Loughner, Caitlin Parker, told ABC News that the suspect had once met Giffords.

“As I knew him more and more after high school, he got a little more odd,” said Parker. “I mean, he was obsessed with the 2012 prophecy. He met Gabrielle Giffords once in ’07 and told me he asked her some question that made absolutely no sense to me, but he said, `I can’t believe she doesn’t understand it. Politicians just don’t get it.’”

Lynda Sorenson said she once took a math class with Loughner said said he “disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts.”

As of Saturday evening, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said the gunman may not have acted alone.

Overnight, authorities released a surveillance camera photo of a man taken near the shooting scene. They said they wanted to talk to the man — a white male with dark hair, dressed in blue jeans and a dark blue jacket. The photo showed a man walking into a store with his hands in his pockets. Authorities said he is 40 to 50 years old.

At least five people were killed and Giffords was shot in the head in the episode, which unfolded as the Democratic congresswoman was greeting constituents in her district in Tucson, Arizona.

Police say the shooter is in custody. He has been identified by officials familiar with the investigation as Jared Loughner, 22.

Must-read articleUPDATE, from Michelle Malkin — The worst sheriff in America. More background information on Loughner and on Sheriff Dupnik.

Another “must read” piece from Moe Lane… Did Dupnik dismiss Loughner threat?

From The Guardian, Jared Lee Loughner: army reject with a troubled past:

Jared Lee Loughner, the alleged gunman in the Tucson shooting of the US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, had been behaving increasingly erratically in recent months.

The 22-year-old army reject had posted rambling videos online in which he made statements about mind control, Swat teams and the gold standard. On his MySpace page he posted a photograph of a handgun resting on top of a United States history textbook.

The motivations for the shootings remained unclear. The Pima County sheriff, Clarence Dupnik, described Loughner as mentally unstable and said he may have had an accomplice.

In October 2007 Loughner was cited in Pima County for possession of drug paraphernalia, a charge that was dismissed after he completed a diversion program, according to online records. “He has kind of a troubled past, I can tell you that,” Dupnik said.

Former schoolmates said Loughner, who remains in police custody, smoked marijuana and was prone to outbursts in class.

In one YouTube video he described himself as a US military recruit, but the US army confirmed he had been rejected for military service in 2008 for reasons it could not disclose.

Loughner had been a student at Pima Community College, but one of the videos he posted online was considered so disturbing by campus administrators that they suspended him in September.

Loughner and his parents attended a meeting with college officials who said he would require mental health clearance if he wanted to return, the New York Times reported.

Investigators have been scouring Loughner’s MySpace page, which was removed within minutes of him being identified as the suspect. At about 5am on Saturday, he had written: “Goodbye [...] Dear friends … Please don’t be mad at me.”

In one of several internet postings, Loughner suggested the government was trying to take advantage of him in some way. One video was called “My Final Thoughts: Jared Lee Loughner!”.

In another posting, he wrote: “All humans are in need of sleep. Jared Loughner is a human. Hence, Jared Loughner is in need of sleep.”

He also wrote about terrorism. “If I define terrorist, then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon. I define terrorist,” he wrote. “If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is ad hominem. You call me a terrorist.”

His YouTube page listed a series of favorite books, including Animal Farm by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

In a video featuring text against a dark background, Loughner described inventing a new US currency and complained about the illiteracy rate among people living in Giffords’s congressional district in Arizona.

“I know who’s listening: Government officials, and the People,” Loughner wrote. “Nearly all the people, who don’t know this accurate information of a new currency, aren’t aware of mind control and brainwash methods. If I have my civil rights, then this message wouldn’t have happen.”

Today, the street where Loughner lived with his parents – a middle-class neighbourhood five minutes from the scene of the shooting – was blocked off by police. Neighbours said Loughner could often be seen walking his dog, almost always wearing a hooded sweatshirt and listening to his iPod. He grew up in Tucson and had been an unremarkable student at Mountain View high school, classmates said.

One high school peer, Grant Wiens, 22, said Loughner seemed to be “floating through life” and “doing his own thing”.

From FOX News GretaWire:

Below is a note from my FNC colleague Jennifer Griffin: (by the way, the fact that my blogs focus on Congresswoman Giffords in no way is meant to take away from the other victims and their families. The tragedy is immeasurable and words inadequate.)

Per Griffin

This is an internal memo obtained by Fox News put out by DHS compiling facts known so far about the case – new – shooter’s mother worked for Pima board of supervisers and the suspected anti-Semitic motivation of the shooter.

MEMO:

“The investigation has been taken over by the FBI, and is being run through the Tucson Command Post. Here’s what can be confirmed at this time (1800 hrs)… * Gabrielle Giffords Is in ICU.* Federal judge John Roll is deceased. He did rule on a 32 million dollar civil rights lawsuit in February, 2010. That ruling brought death threats to Roll and his family, and for a time he was given a protection detail.* 6 deaths attributed to the shooting. 19 total people hit by gunfire.* suspect’s mother works for the Pima County Board of Supervisors* the suspect has multiple arrests … But no criminal record? Intervention by someone?* no direct connection – but strong suspicion is being directed at AmRen / American Renaissance. Suspect is possibly linked to this group. (through videos posted on his myspace and YouTube account.). The group’s ideology is anti government, anti immigration, anti ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti Semitic. Gabrielle Gifford is the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate.* DHS have a list of names and dates of birth of all victims.* the ACTIC is still playing a major role in the investigation… Computer forensics is cleaning up the surveillance videos, and images from around the scene, and involved in the investigation – working together, was MCSO, DPS, Phoenix PD, ICE, and of course the FBI. It did just come in from the command post, that the federal judge was Not originally scheduled to attend the meeting, according to wife. She stated that he received a phone call about an hour before and was invited to attend. Wrong place – wrong time. For the planning side, there are impromptu memorials popping up all over the state, but the largest one is downtown phoenix, at the capital.”

Gunman/murderer Jared Lee Loughner - photo from his MySpace page

From Arizona Daily Star, Man linked to Giffords shooting rampage called ‘very disturbed’:

The suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers, but the threats weren’t against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Dupnik said. The suspect is unstable, Dupnik said, but the sheriff would not say he is “insane.”

A former classmate of Loughner at Pima Community College said he was “obviously very disturbed.”

“He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts,” said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community College’s Northwest campus.

Sorenson doesn’t recall if he ever made any threats or uttered political statements but he was very disruptive, she said. He was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class, said Sorenson, a Tucson resident.

Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughner’s behavior stood out, Ali said.

“It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about,” Ali said.

MySpace, YouTube and Facebook accounts maintained by Loughner suggest he has spent most of his life on the northwest side: His profile says he attended Thornydale Elementary, Tortolita Middle School, Mountain View High School

The online accounts also contain bizarre discussions of a new currency and literacy, as well as threatening and despairing messages.

“WOW! I’m glad i didn’t kill myself. I’ll see you on National T.v.! This is foreshadow …. why doesn’t anyone talk to me?..” he posted on MySpace Dec. 14.

In a YouTube video dated Dec. 15, titled “Introduction: Jared Loughner” the accused gunman describes himself as a U.S. military recruit who had applied to join the Army. The Army, however, said it rejected Lougher as a recruit in 2008.

In the video, Loughner makes a rambling mention of “MEPS in Phoenix” a reference to the Military Entrance Processing Station in the state capital that all Arizona recruits from every branch of service pass through before leaving for basic training.

“Every United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests,” it said. “Jared Loughner is a United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.

“I didn’t write a belief on my Army application and the recruiter wrote on the application: None.”

First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson, said Loughner applied to enlist in December 2008 and was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical. But “he was found to be unqualified so he never joined the Army,” Homme said.

He declined to say why Loughner was rejected, citing confidentiality laws.

Loughner has had at least two minor run-ins with police, according to on-line court records.

In October 2007, Loughner was cited by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department for possession of drug paraphernalia, a charge that was dismissed in November 2007 when he completed a diversion program.

One year later, in October 2008, Loughner was charged with a “local charge” in Marana Municipal Court, that charge was also dismissed following the completion of a diversion program in March 2009.

Court records indicate the Marana case file is due to be purged in December 2013. It’s unclear what the exact charge was.

From Atlas Shrugs, Hitler Lover Loughner Targeted First Jewish Congresswoman from Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords:

In this video, the Arizona political leftwing radical mass slaughterer, Jared Loughner, is dressed up as a terrorist as he sets the American flag on fire. The song you hear is “Let the bodies hit the floor” by the Drowning Pool, the same song the US government used to an interrogation tool at GITMO.

Further, it is now official that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was indeed the target. It bears noting that Giffords is the first Jewish congresswoman elected from that state (Atlas was one of the first to point that out early yesterday). One of Loughner’s favorite books is Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

BTW, Atlas had the youtube vids of this killer first ………

[...]

BTW, he was never in the army. The left was calling him an Afghan war vet. No. He attempted to enlist in 2008 but the army rejected this killer.

America: Your Last Memory In A Terrorist Country!

From Big Government, The Shooting of Rep. Giffords and the Left Wing Smear Machine:

When Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and six others were killed Saturday morning by a gunman Jared Loughner, the left wing smear machine went into high gear. Left wing politicians blamed the Tea Party (before the gunman was even named), and left wing hate sites blamed Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh for the shooting, when it was actually done by one of their murderous own. It’s always one of their own.

Loughner’s leftwing high school friend, Caitie Parker, remembers him as a “political radical”: “He was left wing,” she wrote; “As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal.”

FOX News has reported that the shooter’s favorite books are the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf. Loughner is also reportedly an atheist. There’s an anti-bible quote in one of his videos: “Every United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests. Jared Loughner is a United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.”

Loughner also has a creepy “music video” up on YouTube, in which he is dressed as a terrorist and burns an American flag. FOX News has confirmed that the hooded figure in the video is indeed Loughner.

Also, Congresswoman Giffords is a major Blue Dog Democrat — almost so right wing that she would be considered a conservative in certain areas. She was on almost every important issue essentially a Republican. Her only major left position was support of Obamacare.

But on immigration, she is a blue dog. She supports Second Amendment gun rights and opposed the ban on guns in Washington, D.C. She is also a very strong supporter of border control.

The left hates her. The DailyKos put up a post on January 6, which has now been pulled, saying: “My CongressWOMAN [Gabrielle Giffords] voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!”

This shooting is what they teach, this is the poisonous fruit of their indoctrination. Clearly, Loughner is sick, mentally ill — but suckling at the lefty teat is deadly poison for the soul.

Loughner’s mental illness is as obvious as his leftism. He wrote that “the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.” He also engaged in some deranged rambling about whether or not he was a terrorist: “If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon. I define terrorist. Thus, a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon. If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem. You call me a terrorist. Thus, the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.”

[...]

Hanoi Jane Fonda has blamed the shooting on Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Shame on her and on Arizona State Senator Linda Lopez, who blamed the Tea Party on FOX news without any basis in concretes or any knowledge of the identity of the gunman. Shame on Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who said that the shooting was provoked by “the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government.” Shame on the New York Times’ Paul Krugman, who blamed “the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc.”

Even the Daily Kos’s hate post about Giffords didn’t stop Markos Moulitsas, the site’s founder, from blaming the shooting on “right-wing rhetoric.”

They would never make such a public presumption about jihad or the leftists. Outrageous.

I strongly recommend that left wing defamers and smear merchants tamp down their evil rhetoric and false accusations. They count on the right to do what is proper and decent and maintain a respectful silence (which we always do), while they foam at the mouth with conspiracy theories and outrageous accusations. They expect us to cede them the field, so that by the time we get around to correcting the record, the lies, and the smears — the narrative — is already fixed in America’s psyche.

Those days are over.

Must-readLegal Insurrection, The Palin “Target Map” Lie Has Traveled Far — Loughner’s growing hatred of Rep. Giffords is now proven to go back as far as 2007. LONG before Obama was in office, LONG before anyone outside Alaska had heard of Sarah Palin, LONG before the tea party movement started. Yet, the Obama-adoring media continues to lie, continues to blame Palin.

From RedState, The Media & The Shooter:

This morning we pray for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her family, and the other victims of the heinous violence in Arizona.

It should not be, but the media, under the guise of “a full exposition” of the evil in Arizona, is back to subtly and not so subtly pinning the blame for the attempted assassination of the Congresswoman and the related shootings on the tea party movement, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, me, you, and everyone right of center.

Let’s be crystal clear: this is the supposedly objective news media doing this, not the openly, partisan left, though it is fueling the media witch hunt. And from what we now know, it is not just media malpractice, but a lie.

[...]

Today, the Sunday Shows will all be from Arizona. There will, I have no doubt, be many of them wanting to know if “rhetoric” and “tea parties” and “opposition to Barack Obama” did this.

They will also bring up, as they did yesterday, Sarah Palin putting Gabrielle Giffords on her target list for defeat with a rifle scope symbol over her district.

Here is what will either not be brought up, or if brought up, will only be mentioned in passing.

Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos, the largest left-wing community online, put Gabrielle Giffords on a target list with a bullseye. Just as Sarah Palin removed her post, Markos has removed his.

Another Daily Kos writer, just the other day, penned a post saying Congresswoman Giffords was dead to him.

But then there is the real culprit — the shooter himself.

A friend of the shooter’s described the shooter as decidedly “left-wing” as recently as 2007.

On YouTube, he flagged as a favorite video one of a person dressed as a terrorist burning the American flag. Only a lunatic or a leftist would do that.

His favorite work was not a Glenn Beck book, but a staple of every left-wing bookshelf, the Communist Manifesto.

In the Communist Manifesto, there are numerous, frequent calls for violence against the bourgeoisies.

Left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall’s most recent book calls for a violent response from the left against the right.

Barack Obama himself told left-wing activists, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”

The point of all of this is not to blame Ted Rall, Mr. Obama, Media Matters, MSNBC, any other particular person or group on the left, or the left in general. It is also not to say in any way, shape, or form that the guy is of the left. If, however, we take the evidence as presented and not as the media and left would have it presented, the shooter very clearly is not of the right.

More precisely, the shooter is neither left-wing nor right-wing. He is crazy and evil — a word not used enough. The guy is very clearly not of the tea party movement, not a Dittohead, not led by Sarah Palin, me, or anyone else on the right.

But the media, at least as of this morning and its accumulated coverage so far on this matter, could not care less. The media is intent on yet again exploring right-wing rhetoric and tea party hate. Left-wingers yesterday were falling all over themselves to blame everyone on the right for the horrific shooting.

UPDATE: On the gunman’s family, from Washington Post:

Accused gunman Jared Loughner grew up in a modest neighborhood of one-storey ranches and split-level homes in northwest Tucson.

Neighbors and former classmates from nearby Mountain View High School described Loughner and his parents as loners who rarely spoke even to their immediate neighbors.

“You try to say something, they’d just ignore you and turn around and walk back into the house,” said Ron Johnson, 60, a retiree who lives directly opposite the Loughner’s tan, one-storey home. “The kid – I never talked to him. He acted just like his parents and ignored you.”

Sunday morning, North Soledad Avenue was clear of the investigators and police lights that had dominated the day before. There was no sign of life at the Loughner home, where, for much of Saturday, the suspect’s parents had stood out front fielding law enforcement inquiries, several neighbors said. Instead, camera crews and newspaper reporters made the rounds of neighbors to find out what they could about Loughner and his family.

Isaiah Martinez, 23, who lives with his parents across from the Loughners, graduated from high school a year ahead of the suspect and remembers a quiet boy who wore mostly black clothing, favored metal music and had one or two friends. Martinez, a student at the nearby University of Arizona, most recently saw Loughner walking through the neighborhood Friday night wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and listening to his mp3 player.

[...]

Stephen Woods 46, and his son Anthony, 19, live next door to the Loughners and said they saw the parents or the son walking their dog, but rarely spoke to them. Stephen Woods said he clashed with the suspect’s father after leaving some trash at the curb that did not get picked up. He said he doesn’t know what the parents do for a living, and the most he sees of the family is early each morning when the father waters his garden.

Like other neighbors, Anthony Woods said both the suspect and his father would ignore him when he said hello or waved, so eventually he stopped bothering. Of the suspect, Woods said: “One or two friends would come over occasionally and leave together.”

Two old Chevys – a pickup and a Nova – sit in the driveway of the Loughner’s tan single-storey house, where the backyard fence is aged and peeling and the front porch is littered with empty buckets of roofing tar.

The elder Loughner was known to tinker with the vehicles in the driveway.

Speaking of violent rhetoric, which is the way the Left is failing miserably to cover up one of their own as the apparent guilty party, how about all the violent rhetoric from Zero?

Excellent points made, Larry – Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit has been compiling those disturbing, left-wing threats from Pres. Obama for a while now. No leftist media outcry and barely an acknowledgment of it, however. Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Alan Grayson, Harry Reid, and many other liberal leaders have attacked, maligned, mocked, lied about, name-called, wished harm upon, and verbally eviscerated regular Americans (i.e., Christians, tea party participants, Republicans, conservatives) for a long time now. The left-wing media has ignored it – but now, suddenly, the hate-filled “rhetoric” is being blamed on those whom liberal leaders have been attacking. See how that works? The approved Alinsky method of destroying an “enemy” being used against Americans by our government.

Thank God for conservative and non-partisan bloggers and for FOX News, or by now, the knee-jerk-reaction townspeople would have fired up the pot of tar, grabbed their pointy pitchforks, and tramped across the country to capture and brutalize Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and all other conservatives before ANY evidence, facts, or truth had been released about the murderer or his motivations.

Leftists not only RARELY THINK or carefully examine evidence before drawing their conclusions (including Obama), but when they are pointed out as being wrong because of what the evidence indicates, they will childishly, angrily cling to their erroneous opinions, never wanting to admit they were wrong. None of them would last a day working in the CSI Las Vegas or Miami labs… there, you must let the evidence speak for itself, NOT pin blame on your most convenient scapegoats/enemies from the tea party movement.

Hypothetically, if the shooter had been an Islmaic jihadist in full garb, screaming in Arabic and with an anti-American hate page on the web… well, I believe that leftist nutcases like writers at the Daily Kos and Jane Fonda would have bent over backwards and demanded that we had to protect his/her rights, demanded that no one jump to *cough* any conclusions before all information was in. And even after the evidence was in, if they didn’t like the outcome of the conclusions drawn, could ignore it.

This is so sad. Prayers to the families and the people of Arizona. Such a tragedy. Jared Loughner is a sick minded leftist who used violence to show his hate for teh cngresswoman. I wonder if he ever got help for his mental problems?

LIberals seem more and more to resort to hate and violence when they don’t get theyre way or when they disagree – look at all the hate and death threats being dished on Palin. Conservatives believe in being rational and fair and to use their intelligence. Liberals would rather be dangerous children who lash out when theyre angry.
