From Lingerie to Vodka: Sexy Russian Spy Anna Chapman Has Trademarked Her Name to Cash In on Her Popularity
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on February 5, 2011
Anytime soon, we could be seeing “Anna Vodka” on liquor store shelves.
The Russian press, which can’t get enough of her, has dubbed sexy spy Anna Chapman “Agent 90-60-90.” Those numbers are metric measurements and have been considered since the 1950s by many to be female “vital statistics perfection” — the US equivalent would be “Agent 36-24-36.” However, it must be noted that those are Chapman’s alleged measurements.
Trademarking her name for merchandising purposes is, ironically, an embracing of free market principles, working smartly with supply and demand. Imagine that in Russia. This red-haired Mata Hari stands to become a very rich girl.
From The Star Phoenix, Sultry spy uses name to get business – Looking to cash in on her popularity:
Russian spy Anna Chapman has registered her name as a trademark to cash in on her growing popularity since she was deported in a Cold War-style swap last year, Russia’s state patent agency told Reuters on Tuesday.
“Maybe she wants to open the Anna Chapman dry-cleaner or make cookies,” Nikolai Kravtsov, an official at the agency, told Reuters by telephone, adding that she had registered for the trademark in August.
The 28-year-old redhead has posed in lingerie, attended a space launch and even had a sing-along with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin since she returned to Russia following her arrest and expulsion from the United States in July.
Chapman, nicknamed Agent “90-60-90″ by the Russian press, referring to her alleged measurements, asked to register her name as a trademark for eight lines of merchandise, including vodka, clothing and watches, popular daily Komsomolskaya Pravda reported, saying the trademark would last until 2020.
Chapman’s ex-husband may dispute the legality of the trademark, the paper added. Her British citizenship -which she gained from her marriage to Alex Chapman -was revoked after the spy scandal.
Her little-known maiden name, Kushchenko, is in her Russian passport, the paper added.
Chapman has boosted her image lately. She has attended a political youth rally and two weeks ago launched a weekly television show called Mysteries of the World with Anna Chapman.
Vodka, beer, clothing, Kremlin spy award, men’s magazine cover, government spokeswoman and youth leader, AND star of her own TV show — impressive. Step aside, Kardashian sisters and Snooki — Chapman seems to have you all beat. Did Pres. Obama give any of you your own lion cub?
From The Moscow News, Chapman goes commercial:
Russia’s least secret agent, Anna Chapman, is launching her name upon the high street.
After a wait of several months her name is now a registered trade mark and cosmetics, vodka and clothes, among others, could come to a shop near you bearing her name.
She could also follow Duma belle Alina Kabayeva’s example and unleash a doll in her own image, RBC reported.
Chapman applied to Rospatent to register her name as a trademark in August last year, after her ignominious return from an American courthouse. She received permission to use her name as a brand on Friday.
It will be valid until the year 2020 and could be prolonged, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.
“If you speak of legendary spies there is the registered name ‘Mata Hari’,” said Evgeny Ariyevich, partner at law firm Baker & McKenzie. “Although Anna Chapman doesn’t measure up to Mata Hari, a commercial value has nonetheless appeared and she wants to get some material profit from this,” he told RBC.
Chapman’s name could potentially lend weight to food or beer aimed at a female clientele, says Kirill Bolmatov, director of beer distributers SABMillerRus.
“If you were allowed to use people’s images in beer adverts we would think about associating Ms Chapman with our advertising campaign,” he told RBC.
One option could be for her to open an Anna Chapman pub in a trendy area like the Lyubanka, issue beers with the name and then adjust the packaging to sell to America, suggest Baltika Marketing director Sergei Kuznetsov.
From Reuters, Russian spy Chapman registers her name as trademark:
