Mother Nature’s wintery wrath, once again…
From CBS Chicago, Latest Round Of Snow May Set Record:
CHICAGO (CBS) – A snowstorm swooped into Chicago early Friday, and it could put us over the top for the snowiest February ever.
A total of about 2 to 4 inches of snow were expected in Chicago in the early morning hours.
CBS 2′s Susanna Song reports thundersnow was seen in south suburban Lynwood early Friday. Several flashes of lightning were spotted between 5:30 and 6 a.m.
The snow Friday morning tapered off to flurries by sunrise. But CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros reminds us that Chicago is still trapped in an active weather pattern through the weekend, and a new snowstorm is coming in Friday night.
The second snowstorm will dump another 2 inches or so.
The greatest amount of snow recorded in the month of February in Chicago was the 27.8 inches recorded in 1896, according to the National Weather Service. This February is about 0.8 inches behind that, but with these rounds of snow, the totals for February 2011 will likely supplant that record.
For now, city crews are out in force trying to keep the roads clear. A total of 174 snow-fighting trucks are patrolling the main roads and Lake Shore Drive.
But the city says it’s already over budget for snow removal costs. Some union workers blame unfair distribution of overtime for city crews, who say they cost the city thousands of dollars in extra wages.
The second round of snow will end on Saturday, and on Sunday, rain is expected as the high creeps past the freezing mark. Snow is also expected on Monday.

DNAinfo Weather Update, February 24, 2011
From AccuWeather, Heavy Snow, Rain Targeting Northeast, Atlantic Canada:
A strengthening storm is spreading a swath of heavy snow, flooding rain and increasing wind across the Northeast, with conditions across Atlantic Canada expected to deteriorate.
It is the same storm that brought damaging severe weather and tornadoes to the South Central states Thursday night.
The storm is bringing a plethora of weather to parts of the Midwest and Northeast today, while Atlantic Canada will experience difficult travel conditions tonight into Saturday.
For Chicago and Detroit, more snowflakes are flying this morning. A couple inches of snow is expected around the Motor City by this afternoon.
The heaviest snow will fall from extreme northern Ohio through western and northern New York state, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and into central New Brunswick. In this area, a general 6 to 10 inches of snow will fall with locally heavier amounts.
Cities likely to receive a half a foot of snow ore more include Toledo, Buffalo, Rochester, Burlington, Houlton, Maine, and Miramichi, New Brunswick. Significant snow will fall on London, Toronto and Kingston, Ontario, and Montreal and Quebec City, Quebec, and Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Such a track with the storm is spreading drenching rain from the Ohio Valley through the Virginias, much of Pennsylvania, the Delmarva Peninsula, New Jersey, southern New England and Nova Scotia.
From NPR Blog, 115-Year-Old Snow Record Likely To Fall Tonight In Chicago:
With 3 to 5 inches of snow expected overnight in Chicago, and with 27 inches already having fallen this month in the city, it looks like a record set in 1896 is about to be broken.
The Chicago Tribune says the most snow Chicago ever recorded in February is the 27.8 inches that fell way back when Grover Cleveland was president and 11 years before the Cubs became the Cubs.
It looks like it won’t take long for a new record to be set. According to the National Weather Service, by around midnight local time there may be more than an inch of snow falling per hour.
Fort Wayne has seen more than 48 inches of snow so far this winter — many people are tired of the snow.

Bloom TV: Snow?! In San Francisco?! – February 2011
Reported before the snow fell –from Daily Mail Online, San Francisco STILL waiting for first snow in 35 years as more snow pounds the Midwest:
There is still no signs of the dusting over San Francisco residents were expecting, but predictions are the 35 year snow drought could come to an end this weekend.
But while the Californian city had to made do with heavy rains, the Midwest woke up to yet more snow.
Three inches of snow coated Detroit and Chicago while a storm from Canada brought up to 10 inches to parts of the north east and will spread down the coast.
The snow in the Windy City was just enough to break through it 115 year record of 27.8 inches falling in February.
And for those lucky enough to avoid that blizzard, the severe storm that hit Texas and Oklahoma yesterday has continued its journey northwards.
Heavy rains to New York City, the Ohio Valley, the Virginias, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, could bring flooding.
