Father’s Day Tribute on Google, Plus Some Great Moments with America’s Iconic TV Fathers (video)
Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on June 19, 2011
Father’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates all the wonderful contributions that fathers and father figures make for their children’s lives. It is believed that this day honoring fathers could lie in a memorial service that was held for a large group of men, 210 of them fathers, who were killed in a tragic mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia on December 6, 1907.
Google honors fathers today with a Fathers’ Day logo doodle on its homepage. The home page logo is textured and uses a large man’s tie for the letter “L” in the website’s name “Google.”
According to Dictionary.com, in Hindu tradition, Father’s Day coincides with the new moon day, or Amavasya, during late August. In Thailand, it is customary to honor one’s father with a Canna flower. In Germany, Father’s Day is called Vatertag and is celebrated on Ascension Day, the Thursday 40 days following Easter. It is also called men’s day, Männertag, or gentlemen’s day, Herrentag.
As I did last year, I’ve compiled some amusing and heartfelt video clips of “dad moments” from a few classic TV shows. They don’t make them like this anymore.
To all dads everywhere, including my beloved dad, Russ — thank you for your love and guidance, your humor and values. Happy Father’s Day!
