The anticipated “golf summit” between POTUS and Speaker of the House John Boehner took place on Saturday at the Joint Base Andrews golf course. Pres. Obama drove the golf cart — he is the president, after all.
Curious here — what ever happened with the basketball challenge between Sen. Scott Brown and the president? That athletic challenge was made to Obama in February 2010 by the newly elected senator to raise money for Haiti’s earthquake victims.
Associated Press: Raw Video: Obama, Boehner on the Golf Course – June 18, 2011
From CNN, Obama, Boehner tee off on the links:
The long-awaited golf showdown between President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner is underway: The pair, along with with Vice President Joe Biden and GOP Ohio Gov. John Kasich, hit the links around 10 a.m. Saturday at Joint Base Andrews.
The game was first suggested by then-White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs shortly after Republicans officially took control of the House in January. Boehner signed on that month, saying he’d be happy to play 18 holes with the president – although, he told one interviewer, he was “sure I’ll have to give (Obama) strokes!”
UPDATE 10:50 a.m. ET: According to a pooler description of the action on the first green (described as an “unconfirmed…estimation”), Biden sunk a 15-foot putt for bogey; Obama just missed a 12-footer and tapped in for par; Boehner hit a short putt for par; and Gov. Kasich missed a 30-foot putt for birdie, but was able to save par.
From Doug Powers @ Michelle Malkin’s blog, ‘Golf Summit’ Saturday:
President Obama, Sheriff Joe Biden, John Boehner and John Kasich hit the links this morning. What does this mean for America (other than in the unlikely event a meteor were to strike the course, Daniel Inouye would be president)? I have < a href=”http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/06/18/obama-boehner-tee-off-on-the-links/” target=”_blank”>no idea.
This from Mcnorman’s Weblog:
Most golfers, according to Western Pennsylvania Golf Association spokesman Jeff Rivard, play 20 or so rounds a year. The president has played more than 70 rounds in two years — amid a recession, three wars, a Mideast meltdown, and an economy not flourishing under his stimulus and bailout programs.
“That is well above average, especially for a man with a schedule like that,” said Rivard. “Pretty much double the average.”
From Conservative Bytes, Obama and Boehner Share a Moment During Much-Anticipated Golf Outing:
President Barack Obama drove the cart and House Speaker John Boehner celebrated a short putt during their much anticipated golf outing Saturday at a military base outside the nation’s capital.
Vice President Joe Biden earned the commander in chief’s approval when he sank a 15-to-20 foot putt on the first hole, a par five, at Joint Base Andrews.
“Did you all catch that?” Obama shouted to reporters gathered near the green.
