Oops — Liberal Media Ignored Obama’s Abe Lincoln “Intercontinental Railroad” Gaffe (video)

Posted By on July 5, 2011

Warner Todd Huston is reporting on another Barack Obama gaffe made this February that the liberal media never saw fit to cover. Verum Serum caught this strange boo-boo (add it to the growing pile) from our illustrious POTUS.

Oops.

At least Sarah Palin didn’t say this — had she, the liberal media jackals would have had a heyday.

Huston explains… posted at Big Journalism, Why Did Media Ignore Obama’s Lincoln Railroad Gaffe?:

Apparently the smartest president in history thought that Abe Lincoln built an intercontinental railroad in the midst of the Civil War.

Listen, Abraham Lincoln helped build the interstate, er the intercontinental railroad in the middle of the Civil War because he understood this was going to be important.

For being the smartest person in human history, Obama sure can be a dope sumtimes, kain’t he?

Sorry, Mr. President, but the fact is that there was no intercontinental railroad built by Abe Lincoln. Lincoln did have a hand in assisting America’s first transcontinental railroad to get built.

Even so, it was not finished until years after the Civil War and years after Lincoln’s assassination.

Now, as VS notes, this was just a simple slip of the tongue. It is easy to mix up “inter” with “trans,” to be sure. Not really a big deal, truthfully. I am sure he meant transcontinental.

But the left’s “gotcha” machine is in high gear for anyone that might be considered a Republican or a conservative. The left’s handmaidens in the Old Media are keeping a sharp eye out for anyone on the right side of the aisle who might perpetrate a misspeak or two.

Remember Palin’s Paul Revere incident or Bachmann’s John Wayne comment? These comments were used by the Old Media for days and days of finger pointing and laughing. Yet, strangely, Obama’s “intercontinental” comment has never seen the light of day until VS noticed it.

From Verum Serum, The Gaffe that Time Forgot: Lincoln’s Intercontinental Railroad:

Is this a big deal? Of course not. It’s obvious the President stumbled, probably thinking of our modern interstate road system and transposed that onto the transcontinental railroad. But if Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann had said this, you can bet there would be lots of people pointing out what an embarrassing historical gaffe it was. Paul Revere’s ride and John Quincy Adams are the most recent examples of this trend. Those gaffes were national news. The intercontinental railroad was not.

People misspeak. Sometimes they say things that are wrong. The difference is, the right doesn’t capitalize on everyone of these and try to form a narrative around them about the stupidity of, say Barack Obama. The left can’t seem to help itself, especially when it comes to conservative women.

If the liberal media felt compelled to minimize Pres. Obama’s recent gaffes when he mixed up the names of living and dead Medal of Honor awardees last month at Fort Hood and screwed up protocol while toasting Queen Elizabeth and signed the formal guest book at Westminster Abbey with the wrong year during his May UK trip, you know that any of Obama’s historical blunders like this railroad one will be buried faster than a Pelosi-Biden blink-off as we draw closer to the 2012 election.
