Republican Turner Has Defeated Dem Weprin, Wins Weiner’s Seat in NY’s District 9 — Whiner in Chief Obama Has Launched a New “Snitch Police Squad”

Historic election in the Big Apple — a congressional seat in New York’s District 9, held by Democrats since 1923, is held by them no longer.

The seat in the House of Representatives was vacated when disgraced (and married) Rep. Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress, following his escalating Twitter sex scandal with young women — including a college student and Ginger Lee, an adult film actress and stripper — came to light at the beginning of the summer by Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government site and was picked up by a number of conservative bloggers over the Memorial Day weekend. Liberal news sources and bloggers underplayed or simply didn’t report the Weinergate sex scandal story until it became too big to ignore.

Compounding the disenchantment with the Democrat party is the growing unpopularity of Pres. Barack Obama — his poor Keyenesian economic policies, his/Pelosi’s forcing of the jobs-killing and freedom-robbing ObamaCare, his failed-before-it’s-started American Jobs Act, and his reluctance to support our ally Israel (his appalling snubbing of PM Benjamin Netanyahu last year was a dumbfounding disgrace) — voters everywhere have become increasingly disgusted with the Democrat party. And the growing scandal with Obama-endorsed solar panels company Solyndra is just now growing legs.

Rather than listen to the majority of American people, rather than become a more effective leader with viable, proven economic plans to assist the nation out of the worst economic recession and unemployment we’ve seen in decades, our petulant president has launched a new “snitch police squad” to report any smears, gossip, or dissension against him.

Good grief. What a whiner.

New York — well done. Do the same in 2012.

Reported by The Atlantic, Bob Turner Wins New York 09 Special Election:

QUEENS, N.Y. — With more than half of precincts reporting, retired media executive and Republican Bob Turner beat New York State Assemblyman David Weprin in the special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by Anthony Weiner Tuesday in an upset capture of a solidly Democratic seat last in GOP hands in 1923. Results from 329 of 512 precincts in the 9th congressional district — a largely white ethnic, middle- to upper-middle class community that spans parts of Queens and Brooklyn — found Turner leading 53 percent to 47 percent over Weprin.

“I’ve seen enough, it’s done…now very comfortable making this projection: Bob Turner (R) defeats David Weprin (D) in #NY09″ concluded Dave Wasserman, the U.S. House editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, as early results trickled in. Observed Nate Silver of The New York Times, “A crude extrapolation from borough-wide results would have Turner winning this by about 10 points.”

The race, like many special election contests, had become a closely watched as national party analysts on both sides of the aisle predicted it would show just how damaged President Obama is as the economy continues its years-long stall. Democrats had begun pre-spinning a potential Weprin loss after a Siena College poll showed him trailing Friday, seeking to cast it as nothing more than a quirky election with a bad candidate before an Israel-obsessed Queens electorate. But Turner’s surge in the district once held by Sen. Chuck Schumer and one-time vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro also offers a cautionary tale.

“This is not a district that Republicans have any right to believe we could win,” said House Speaker John Boehner before polls closed at 9 pm EST. Democrats hold a three-to-one registration advantage in the 9th.

In many ways, the compressed special election triggered by Weiner’s resignation produced a strange race. Weprin repeatedly attempted to paint Turner as what New York State Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi described Tuesday as “a scary, scary guy [who] wants to cut Medicare and Social Security.” Picked to go on the ballot by the Queens Democratic machine, Weprin was at times an uncertain candidate, though his performance on the stump improved by the end. Which candidate would be the more adamant friend to Israel in the House was a constant debate, with Weprin, who an Orthodox Jew, charging Turner, a Catholic, with being a recent convert to the cause. But in the end the Queens machine led by Rep. Joe Crowley wasn’t able to muscle Weprin, who didn’t spark much enthusiasm amongst the Democratic base, toward a solid showing.

From Washington Post, Republican Bob Turner wins New York special election:

Businessman Bob Turner (R) defeated state Assemblyman David Weprin (D) in the special election for the House seat held by former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner (D).

Turner’s victory is regarded as an upset given the Democratic history of the 9th district, which takes in portions of Brooklyn and Queens, as well as the fact that President Obama carried the seat by 11 points in 2008.

Weprin has yet to concede, but the Associated Press has called the race for Turner.

Although the district may well be eliminated by Empire State line-drawers tasked with cutting down New York’s congressional delegation by two seat before 2012, the result will buoy Republicans hopes heading into 2012 and spur anxiety among Democrats.

The seat, which was vacated by Weiner earlier this year following relevations of his involvement in a series of online liaisons with women who weren’t his wife, was initially considered safe for Democrats.

While it’s conservative by New York City standards, Democrats still have a 3-to-1 registration advantage here.

Republicans sought to turn the race into a referendum on President Obama, tying Weprin to the surprisingly unpopular commander-in-chief at every turn. (Obama’s approval rating was at 43 percent in the district, according to a survey conducted by Siena Research Institute).

[...]

As we’ve written, special elections are notoriously unreliable as predictors of future results. But for now, Democrats have reason to be spooked.

From Fox News:

In a New York City district last represented by a Republican in 1923 and formerly represented by both Sen. Chuck Schumer and 1984 Democratic vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro, a Republican businessman, Bob Turner, cruised to victory over a well-known Democratic politician.

Voters in the overwhelmingly Democratic district made no bones about the fact that they wanted to send a message to the president.

Rep. Anthony Weiner represented the heavily Jewish district, which includes parts of Brooklyn and much of Queens, until he got caught lying about his Twitter sexcapades. But the race came down to disappointment with the president’s policies: his less friendly approach to Israel than his predecessors at a time of crisis and uncertainty for that country as well as his economic agenda here at home. There was also the fact that Democrat David Weprin was a proponent of a new law allowing same-sex marriage in New York.

While Obama can still take New York for granted in 2012, the results are worrying. If Jewish voters in Florida decide that Obama is not worth saving next year, it could greatly diminish Obama’s chances for re-election.

As the president considers how to respond to the growing pressure on Israel in the Middle East, including a new rise in Islamism in the region and the pending bid at the U.N. for statehood by the Palestinian Authority, Obama will also be keeping one eye on Palm Beach County.
