White House Halloween: Obama’s Trick-or-Treat Goodie Bags for the Kids Weren’t As Ghastly As I Thought They Would Be (video)

The Halloween treats that were handed out to costumed children at Pres. Obama’s White House over the weekend weren’t as frighteningly terrible as I thought they’d be.

Yes, they were health-conscience, but in a good way with dried fruit — no spinach, no arugula, no carved radishes — and OH, MY… CANDY AND COOKIES WERE INCLUDED THIS YEAR.

I’m surprisingly impressed by the beautiful, tasteful way they were packaged in official WH goodie bags for the children.

So, thumbs up to POTUS and FLOTUS — or, more accurately, thumbs up to their Halloween treats staffers.

Reported by The Hill, A White House Halloween: White jack-o-lanterns, dried fruit and a little candy:

Jack-o-lanterns and cobwebs adorn the White House this Halloween, as a web video released Friday offers a close look at the seasonal decorations and trick-or-treating goodies the First Family will be serving.

The White House staff carved out ghoulish faces from the pumpkins President Obama bought out at a farm in Virginia earlier this month. There are even some colorful topiaries of pumpkins and gourds adorning the steps of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in case jack-o-lanterns are too scary for young trick-or-treaters.

The White House video details the goody bags that the Obama’s will serve trick-or-treaters this year.

Halloween at the White House

From ABC News, A White House Halloween:

As the trick-or-treaters make their way across the lawn to the North Portico, which will be lit orange for the occasion, they will be entertained by the Marine Band playing Halloween music and spooked by actors in costume from Washington-area theaters.

While the president joked earlier in the week that the White House was in danger of being “egged” if the first lady kept handing out fruit on Halloween, it appears they’ve reached a compromise.

Children will receive a box of M&M’s, a White House Sweet Dough Butter Cookie made by White House pastry chef Bill Yosses and, of course, a serving of dried fruit.

From CNN, Washington-area kids brave soggy weather for White House tricks and treats:

Some children in Washington braved cold and soggy weather Saturday for an early Halloween treat — a brief visit to the White House.

President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and the first lady’s mother, Marian Robinson, emerged from the North Portico of the White House Saturday afternoon to hand out goodie bags to the children.

“Let’s give out some candy,” President Obama said as he walked outside. “I know it’s cold here, you guys doing alright? It’s not ideal out here.”

Many of the kids wore costumes hidden beneath their wet winter coats. Spotted: several princesses, witches, Batman, a police officer, Harry Potter and at least one penguin. A boy dressed as a headless man prompted a reaction from the president. “Look at this guy! It’s a headless man — terrible.”

The president and first lady did not wear costumes, although Robinson sported a pair of bunny ears.

According to the White House, the kids came from elementary schools in Washington, Maryland and Virginia, from the Boys and Girls Club of America, and from military families.
