Winter Storm Hits Denver, Occupy Denver Protestors Out in Cold & Snow (video)

Early winter storm hits Denver, Colorado

It’s mighty cold now in Denver, after a winter storm hit the region.

However, Occupy Denver protestors are angrily shaking their fists at the skies and vow that they will stay.

Idiots.

From 9News, Colorado weather forecast: Blizzard conditions expected with snow and wind:

This storm system is colder and contains much more wind than the snow that came on Wednesday. It is a combination capable of creating a travel nightmare in parts of the state, according to the Colorado weather forecast.

9NEWS Meteorologist Marty Coniglio says the snow will finish up by noon Wednesday over the Denver area and Northern Colorado, but down along the Palmer Divide and Monument Hill, the snow could last as late as 3 p.m.

Total snowfall for the Denver metro area by noon Wednesday is currently forecast to be 5 to 10 inches, with 8 to 14 inches in the mountains and foothills along the Front Range.

From Washington Post, Denver weather turns wintry; Occupy protesters say they fear they will die:

Monday’s record 80-degree temperatures in Denver were replaced Tuesday night by a wet and heavy snowstorm that left trees bent, power out, and the wind howling. Some areas of the state got up to 10 inches of snow.

Occupy Denver protesters, who have been occupying the Civic Center Park for nearly a month, didn’t do well with their first taste of the cold, as temperatures fell to 38 degrees in the early morning and forecasters predicted they’d soon drop to the 20s.

Occupy organizers told police who tried to tear down their tents Tuesday night that they feared people forced to sleep in the open would die from the cold. In the following video from Occupy Denver, an organizer says that several people have already had to be removed from the park for hypothermia…

From KDVR News, Occupy Denver demonstrators brave storm; 2 hospitalized:

DENVER — Occupy Wall Street protesters said Wednesday they took two demonstrators to a Denver hospital with symptoms of hypothermia during an overnight snowstorm.

Protesters said they took the two, whom they did not identify, from Civic Center Park to nearby Denver Health medical center and that the pair will be OK. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not immediately verify that the two were taken there.

About 30 people stayed at Civic Center Park overnight, bundled up on the ground under tarps after police officers forced them to take down tents. Denver saw between 2 inches and 4 inches of snow overnight. Another 4 to 8 inches of snow were expected by late Wednesday.

“This is a big test, for sure,” said 51-year-old Dwayne Hudson, a landscaper who has been living at the Occupy Denver site for 11 days. “We’re going to stay out here as long as we can, but it’s getting tough.”

Hudson was up before dawn unloading fresh water from a supporter. He rubbed his hands together and held onto a pink umbrella as heavy, wet snow fell.

Protesters say about 50 sympathizers stopped by overnight to drop off blankets, gloves, chili and hot chocolate. One of the supporters, Gary Crabtree of Denver, dropped off supplies Wednesday morning and said he’s frustrated that officers didn’t allow tents.

From Denver Westworld:

As the weather hit thirty degrees and the season’s first snow closed in on Occupy Denver last night, members turned once more to tents as a refuge from the elements. Because this was the reason the state patrol raided the camp two weeks ago, the four new tents lasted only an hour. Nights like the last one prefigure a more difficult protest season and slimmer numbers for the group.

Because of poor weather that began with cold rain and eventually transitioned to solid snow, the group huddled under trees, umbrellas and tarps, and all personal property was covered with donated blue and black tarps, or “tents without poles” as the group distinguishes them from the park ordinance banning structures. The Thunderdome was hardly recognizable under a series of plastic shields collecting puddles while protecting the food.
