From WBBH News, Report: Teacher admits to selling grades:
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL – There are new details in the investigation into a former Charlotte County High School teacher who is accused of improving a student’s quiz grade in exchange for cash. According to the investigative report, math teacher Jeff Spires admitted to taking money from two students during the first quarter of the year.
Spires spoke with administrators during the investigation and admitted to taking money from two students in exchange for improving their grades in his math classes.
Spires said he took approximately $60-$70 from an eleventh grader on two occasions in exchange for improving the student’s quiz grades on September 16th and September 30th.
The money was either stapled or paper clipped to the test,
The eleventh grader received a B on his report card but actually earned a C, according to Spires.
In addition, Spires said a senior gave him either $15 or $30 to improve a grade on one quiz, which did not affect the student’s overall grade that quarter.
The students gave different accounts. The junior told investigators he gave Spires money on four occasions and the senior said he only gave Spires $10.
Spires also admitted a sophomore approached him and offered $200 to change her grade from a B to an A, but Spires said he told her no.
The investigation revealed the girl asked for the grade change after grades had been submitted for the quarter.
Spires said this was the only year he took money for grades.
