Oh, Dear: Steven Tyler & His Mangled, “Dying Raccoon” Version of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at Patriots-Ravens Game (video)

Posted By on January 23, 2012

This tweet from RedEye’s conservative talk show host and comedian Greg Gutfeld sums up his appraisal of Steven Tyler’s performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at yesterday’s AFC Championship:

Greg Gutfeld tweet: 'i went outside to put a raccoon out of its misery - then i realized my neighbor was watching Steven Tyler sing the Star-Spangled Banner'

Steven, Steven, Steven… what were you thinking, dude?

Love it, or loath it? “Dream on” about loving it.

If Tyler had auditioned with this pitchy, screechy, lyrics-mangling version of the national anthem while the always-blunt Simon Cowell was still judging American Idol, Cowell would have deftly filleted him like a trout.

Steven Tyler Sings National Anthem | AFC Championship 2012

From Fox News, Steven Tyler botches ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’: Worst National Anthem ever?

Almost a year after Christina Aguilera botched the National Anthem at last year’s Super Bowl, somebody may have done it even worse: Steven Tyler. The 63-year-old “American Idol” judge performed a screechy rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Sunday’s AFC Championship game, wearing a sequined scarf in honor of the New England Patriots.

But even though the crowd cheered him on, critics have been pretty tough on the Aerosmith frontman, with Fox columnist Jason Whitlock tweeting: “Steven Tyler far more obscene than Janet Jackson’s t*tty.”

Hollywood Scoop: Steven Tyler Messes Up the National Anthem at Ravens-Patriots Game

From The Vancouver Sun, Steven Tyler shreds The Star Spangled Banner:

Sunday at Gillette Stadium, Steven Tyler — the American Idol host, Aerosmith frontman and beloved bayou he-banshee — roused himself from whatever enchanted swamp or Home Depot aisle where he usually lurks, and took the field to sing the American national anthem at the AFC Championship game.

It’s not as though Sunday’s performance revealed a new side of the Aerosmith frontman. And just to remind you, there’s footage of Tyler doing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2001 Indianapolis 500 below. (NEVER FORGET.)

Scary — Steven Tyler sings “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 2001 at the Indy 500:

From Washington Post, Steven Tyler’s national anthem: How bad was it?:

The choice seemed daring and, sure enough, Steven Tyler delivered a national anthem before the AFC Championship game Sunday that was variously described with verbs like “screetch” and “butcher” and “mangle” by fans on Twitter.

You get the point, but was it really that bad?

Was the rendition by Tyler, Aerosmith’s 63-year-old lead singer and “American Idol” judge, bad enough to get him kicked off his own show if he were a contestant? Tyler, a New England Patriots fan, missed the high note — sounding oddly like a raven — and either messed up the words (“as bombs bursting in air”) or slurred them (“oh the land of the free”), but at least his team managed to win and advance to Super Bowl XLVI.

From CBS News, Steven Tyler: How bad was his national anthem rendition?:

How would his fellow “American Idol” judges rate Steven Tyler’s rendition of the national anthem at the AFC championship game on Sunday?

Let’s just say, it probably wouldn’t get him to Hollywood.

A New England Patriots fan, the 63-year-old Aerosmith frontman warbled “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the New England Patriots played the Baltimore Ravens. He missed the high note and butchered some of the lyrics (“oh the land of the free”). Heckling began before his performance ended.

On Twitter, it’s being described with terms like screech and mangle. CBSNews.com’s “American Idol” blogger, Chris Matyszczyk, described it like this: “It was that Steven Tyler had sung the national anthem at the AFC Championship game in a manner that might have frightened the Alien back into John Hurt’s intestines.”
