Holy Double Standard: Flagrant Christian Bashing with ABC’s “GCB,” aka “Good Christian Bitches”

Posted By on March 11, 2012

New ABC show, 'GCB,' is an acronym for 'Good Christian Bitches'

The title “GCB,” a wink-wink acronym compromise for its original, offensive title of “Good Christian Bitches,” has been all I’ve needed to not waste an hour of my life to tune in to ABC/Disney’s latest mid-season entry into primetime television (Walt Disney must be spinning like a Disneyland teacup in his grave for the umpteenth time).

Every primetime show ABC has launched during the past few years has successfully enticed me nada. And the new comedy-drama “GCB,” starring Leslie Bibb, Annie Potts, and Kristin Chenoweth that premiered this past week, is keeping my no-watch record intact.

When can we expect ABC to follow up with the edgy “GMB” (“Good Muslim Bitches”) and “GDB” (“Good Democratic Bitches”)? How about the daring “Good Black Bitches” and “Good Asian Bitches”?

Holding your breath isn’t recommended. Only Christian bashing — white Christian bashing — is permitted in Hollywood.

The Sunday air day of this show seems to be no coincidence, either. Nor is the stunning lack of casting any minorities in key roles. Only well-to-do white Christians in Dallas, Texas? Seems racist to me.

Democrats are still having their contrived Victorian hissy over radio host Rush Limbaugh suggesting that a sexually active, 30-year-old women’s reproduction activist who wants others to pay her whopping $1,000 a year bill for birth control is a “slut.”

However, there’s been not a peep from all those “good liberals” who screamed and rallied to coddle Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke and to treat her like the innocent victim she is not.

Synopsis of the show from IMDb.com:

Amanda Vaughn is a recently widowed mother of two who, to get a fresh start, moves back to the affluent Dallas neighborhood where she grew up to find herself in the whirling midst of salacious gossip, Botox, and fraud.

Apparently, there was a struggle over the show’s title because of its origins:

The Kim Gatlin novel on which this TV series is based is titled not “GCB” but “Good Christian Bitches.” That title was also originally given to this show’s pilot, but was then changed to “Good Christian Belles” before promotion of the show started, but then changed again to just the ambiguous abbreviation “GCB”.

Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese has already pulled its advertising.

Has there been even ONE Democrat who has spoken out against this obvious denigration and cartoonish stereotyping of Christian women? Well, yes.

Happily, I’ve found one — Democrat New York Councilman Peter Vallone is calling for a boycott of “GCB,” telling TMZ, “The title of the show alone is yet another outrageous attack on the Christian faith. Charlie Sheen will be back on “Two and a Half Men” before we see a similar title targeting another religion.” Vallone, when asked about the show’s title change, said, “No one is fooled by that ridiculous claim. The original intent is clear, and changing the title of a show in your head doesn’t count.”

Former Speaker of the House and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has also spoken out against “GCB,” calling it “anti-Christian”:

“Here’s to show you the biases of the elite media, look at the new show that’s on that has the word ‘Christian’ in it and I want you to take the exact name, drop out Christian and put in Muslim,” Gingrich said. “And ask yourself, is there any network that would have dared to run a show like that and you know the answer is not a one because anti-Christian bigotry is just fine in the entertainment industry but they have to be very protective of Islam.”

Suggestive billboard advertising the premier of 'GCB'

From NewsBusters, Bozell Column: ‘GCB,’ or Good Christians Bashed:

At the same time Washington was ablaze with outrage at the idea that Rush Limbaugh insulted a woman as a “slut,” ABC premiered a new Sunday night show called “GCB” – shortened from “Good Christian Bitches.” Limbaugh apologized. ABC displays no such contrition. They insulted only those Christians. In the midst of this trashy debut, ABC promoted a new sitcom coming in April titled “Don’t Trust The B—- in Apartment 23.”

ABC advertised the debut of “GCB” with a photo of actress Kristin Chenoweth in a choir robe cut way above the knee, as if such a thing exists. “Love One Another,” it read, dripping in sarcasm. That’s Hollywood’s definition of a “good Christian.”

[...]

Time TV critic James Poniewozik protested “I have a hard time believing that anyone will see themselves insulted by GCB: its target is not Christians but phonies.” Not so. There are certainly Christian hypocrites that can make for great grist in entertainment. But this show offers the viewing public no authentic Christians at all.

We can’t say this is surprising. Nor are we surprised by the shamelessly dishonest spin of ABC. Channing Dungey, a senior vice president of drama development for the Disney-owned network said she always knew this show was a “home run” from the beginning. The title was provocative, yes, but “treating religion and Christianity with respect is very important to everyone involved.”

Laugh track, please. What’s next? “Good Jewish Money-Grubbers” as “treating Judaism with respect” as well?

[...]

When Chenoweth protests “we live in a righteous community,” Bibb’s character rips up Dallas. “Fun fact. Dallas has more churches per capita than anywhere on earth. Also, Dallas has more strip clubs per capita than anywhere on earth. Two plus two equals a double standard.”

Ignore whether the “fun fact” is true – multiple cities claim to have the most churches per capita. Also, Portland claims the title of most strip clubs. This line neatly summarizes ABC’s take on churchy Christians. Anywhere they gather in great numbers, their badly hidden sins and perversions naturally trail closely behind. Christians, the audience at home should believe, are nothing but phonies. No other faith in America gets lined up for this kind of bashing.

As anyone could have predicted, ABC is clearly pitching “GCB” as a replacement for the dying soap “Desperate Housewives,” merely adding the Texas Christian angle to make the plots extra-scandalous. Hollywood seems to think everyone is a selfish and cynical hypocrite. But not everyone lives in a gaudy piranha bowl like they do in Tinseltown.

From RedState, We Are at War. Is the Media Scared to Really Cover It?:

Journalists are much more tolerant of attacks on Christianity than Islam. It is a fact.

ABC is airing a television show called “Good Christian Bitches.” Never mind the outrage over the recent Sandra Fluke business, but there is a double standard. And let’s not fool ourselves as the media would never tolerate a story where “Muslim” was substituted for “Christian” in that show.

The media’s present politically correct excuse is that Islam binds certain minority group’s cultures in a way Christianity does not. First, that is crap and speaks of a secular ignorance about many Christian communities even in this country. Second, it is an excuse so the media does not have to admit it is scared of muslims. You’ll see a news story about Christ in a jar of urine, but don’t ever expect to see a cartoon of Mohammed on the nightly news. The reporter doesn’t want to get murdered.

I am starting to wonder if the same holds true in the present war our country finds itself in that too few reporters are really brave enough to cover. We are at war on our southern border with Mexico and the press is really not doing justice to coverage of the war.

Even the liberal-leaning Los Angeles Times was unimpressed with the show’s debut:

Let’s pray that ABC adds some heart and soul to ‘GCB,’ which falls prey to easy, tired stereotypes of rich Southern women.

[...]

They all attend the same church, of course, Our Lady of the Two-Faced Hypocrite. Well no, that’s not really the name because for one thing it’s a non-specific Protestant church (so no “Our Lady”), but “GCB” does certainly aim to satirize a certain brand of self-defining, self-satisfied Christian.

[...]

Mark Deklin, who plays Cricket’s gay husband Blake, is also a bright spot with a potentially interesting story line. But only if subsequent episodes can find room for a little heart, or non-denominational charity, amid all the jokes about the silly, shallow, vain lives of rich white Christian women.

And for that, dear Lord, we most fervently pray.

For the record, I know many attractive, well-off, white Christian women who spend much of their time selflessly performing charity work, overseeing Bible studies, conducting food and clothing drives, taking Sunday School and youth group students on day trips, being happily available for myriad last-minute needs to help others less fortunate — and none of whom are shallow nor vain. These women are vibrant, loving, giving people who strive to make the world a better place and who rejoice in their faith, who daily try to live up to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Not surprising that Hollywood would rather take the low road to stereotype and mock Christian women with these conniving, mean-spirited, one-dimensional cartoon characters than to celebrate REAL Christian women.

I wonder if a show called “Good Muslim B*tches” would have an advertisement showing a woman wearing a burqa cut way above the knee. That is an amusing mental image.
