Man’s Best Friend Is… Feline? Courageous Family Cat Saves 4-Year-Old Boy from Vicious Dog Attack in California (video)

Barely moments after a neighbor’s dog stalked and then viciously attacked a young boy playing in front of his home in Bakersfield, California, the family’s cat took action.
Tara the cat is being hailed as a hero, and rightfully so. Had she not charged, tackled, and chased off the dog so quickly to protect the boy, this likely would have been a story of horrific tragedy, perhaps death, for little Jeremy Triantafilo. Jeremy is mildly autistic.
The attack, which happened two days ago and was unprovoked (shown in the incredible surveillance video below), has mandated that the dog be put under observation at the Bakersfield Animal Control Center. A police spokesman said that the dog will likely be euthanized.
I’ve owned at least a dozen cats through out my lifetime, and I’ve not ever seen anything like this. Not ever.

From LA Times, Family cat charges dog, stops attack on Bakersfield boy:
A family cat charged, tackled and then chased off a dog as it viciously attacked his owner’s 4-year-old son this week in their Bakersfield driveway.
Caught on what appears to be security surveillance video and recently posted to YouTube by the boy’s father, the footage shows the dog wandering around the family SUV in the driveway where the boy is riding his tricycle.
A few seconds later, the dog suddenly comes around the SUV and attacks the boy’s ankle, pulling him from the bike. Within seconds, Tara the family cat sprints into view and rams into the dog before chasing it away from the boy.
Soon after, the cat returns to the boy, who appears to be receiving aid from his mother.
The boy received stitches for a deep bite wound on his leg, his mother told KERO-TV Channel 23 in Bakersfield.
From KERO News in Bakersfield:
A cat came to her best friend’s rescue Tuesday when a young boy was attacked by a dog in his driveway in Southwest Bakersfield and it was all caught on video.
The surveillance video shows the boy, 4-year-old Jeremy, playing on his bicycle. He was coming home from school when he wanted to fly a kite. Jeremy has mild autism.
The neighbor’s dog, an 8-month-old labrador/chow mix, sneaks up behind him and bites his leg.
The family’s cat, named Tara, rushed the attacking dog and chased it away.
“Tara is my hero,” Jeremy said.
Erica Triantafilo, Jeremy’s mother, was nearby watering a tree when she heard his screams.
“I didn’t really even realize what had happened until after when my husband showed me the surveillance video,” Erika said.
Erica told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine. Erica said it could have been much worse.
“I’ve never seen a cat do that,” said Roger Triantafilo, Jeremy’s father. “Especially ours. It just shows how much she really has a family-oriented mind set.”
